I had the same experience with the same outcome. Threw a plastic tarp over the trap and very carefully opened it from an awkward position.Felt like I was defusing a bomb
I did pretty much the same. I used one of those blue tarps to shield myself while carefully opening the other end. At first he wouldn't come out then when he did he took a few steps, turned around and threatened to spray me. Thankfully, it was only a threat. After that he ran under my deck where I believe he lives to this day.
