By your definition Thomas Jefferson was not eligible to be President. Neither was Madison, Jackson, possibly Van Buren...

Wow. So insightful. So tell me, constitutional expert, where in the constitution it says both parents have to be citizens for one to be “natural born”? Seems to me that the issue is that the constitution is a little vague in that respect. Since many of the founding fathers had parents from other countries, it would seem to me that parental birthplace may not have been critical. Being born a citizen was their intent, not instituting a complex system of citizen rank.

I apologize for my late reply.

“Who is your choice for VP Gatun? Just curious.”

Crumbs, pistol. Thank you for asking. Right now I am still trying to get over my disappointment over the Republican choice. Romney is just another one who has been shoved down our throats by the Republican elitists. There is no Dick Cheney types around for VP to help in the process in making things look a little better.

Who is your choice? I need some help here.

Thank you for your note.

“Sure apology gladly accepted. We have posted to each other about Elian Gonzalez before and his mango tree lawyer -lol.”

I was so awful to you. I do not deserve your kindness in anyway.

“Being an immmigrant who came by himself to America at same age as Elian, I was so ashamed of this country for the way it sacrificed this boy whose mother lost her life to give him freedom.”

From where? From Cuba? I would love to know although it is none of my business.

“I guess you got my point about Sean Penn and the rest.”

From what I have read several times here on FR, their hotel rooms have hidden surveillance cameras. LOL.

Maybe mine did too, but they would have been bored sick since I was not there to badmouth. I was there to learn.

“One doesn’t have to go to Cuba to understand communism and its evils. And some who go never learn.”

What I kept picturing in my mind was what a beautiful city Havana was before Castro. It definitely was gorgeous. But now, it had/has fallen into ruins. Parts of Havana look like some of those photos of Europe, especially Germany, during and after WWII…total ruination…buildings crumbling…holes in the walls where windows were at one time, etc.

“I’m sure the people are wonderful as you say. Most folks are. Am glad you have good memories of your time there. Thanks again for writing back.”

By now, a couple of generations have come to life and many don’t know the difference between then and now.

By the way, the Hemmingway bar I visited is called La Floridita. Hemmingway’s favorite drink was daiquiris. They were delicious. I kept looking up expecting Hemmingway to come walking in through the door.

“My stepdad was stationed there and loved it. I’ve lived over half my life in Hawaii.”

I LOVE Hawaii!!! I have been there twice. Geologically speaking, it is a most impressive place.

What caught me pleasantly by surprise was looking down from a hilltop and realized the Punchbowl Cemetery was built in an extinct daughter volcano.

It blew my mine.

“Similar climate, but we have better chicken coops.”

LOL!!! Okay.

“What do you think this country of 300 million should do about Panama?”

Nothing, nothing, nothing. Panama is on its own.

1. Panama has a copper mine going full blast.
2. It has two gold mines ready to exploit.
3. There is the expansion of the Panama Canal.
4. Petrol has been found leaking out of the ground near the Colombian boarder, which means we will have to share with Colombia.
5. There are more jobs (manual) in Panama than there are people.
6. Another new bank is getting ready to open.

This is totally amazing since Panama has only a little over 3,000,000 folks and not 300,000,000.

“My stepdad was stationed there and loved it.”

If I may ask, where was your stepfather stationed? Again, none of my business.

Not a day passes when I don’t think of Elian Gonzalez. What a tragedy.

Thank you for kindness against my rudeness.

Please keep in touch.

wow, you really can’t spend 10 minutes to read the Constitution. obviously you’re a DU cockroach, but it’ll stomp you for the amusement of others

from article 2 section 1:
“No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.”

now, deploying basic third grade reading skills, one is able to easily see that the founders had written an exception for themselves:

“or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution”

also, realize that they made a distinction between a citizen and a natural born citizen. people were born within the United States at the time, but their parents may not have been. additionally, their parents were most likely not citizens of the US, as it didnt exist and many people were immigrants

As the founders made such a distinction further reinforces the definition of a Natural born citizen as they wanted to emphisize that just being a citizen was not enough. they wanted to insure that the person in the top office did not have split allegiances, at least by birth. this was also discussed in the federalist papers.

the distinction between citizen and natural born citizen is further emphasized as one notes the other offices only require a person to be a citizen, leaving only the office of the president to have the natural born requirement. if they were the same, there wouldn’t be such a distinction

additionally, the term natural born citizen, has been in world wide use since long before the writing of the Constitution. common terms need no definition.

your ignorance was not their problem

You can say “the term natural born citizen, has been in world wide use since long before the writing of the Constitution. common terms need no definition” until you are blue, but it seems that the constitution did not define it, leaving up to lawyers and judges to do so. Seems that the “common” definition is one who is a citizen who was born that way, not naturalized later. I state it again, there is no constitutional definition of “natural born citizen.”

they didn’t define the word ‘trade’ either, yet people with a working frontal lobe have been able to ponder its meaning

denying the meaning, even as statement by supreme court justices (minor v happersett 1876), just means your trying to deceive (and have a touch of psychosis).

again, your ignorance was not their problem

Well, as far as Romney being the nominee. We, Conservatives, have ourselves to blame. We do it every cycle. The Conservatives have 10 candidates vying for the nomination; and then, there is a lone Moderate. The Conservatives bite, devour and destroy each other and the Moderate waltzes in to the Coronation. Let me use Walt Kelly’s famous paraphrase of a statement by Commander Oliver Hazard Perry:

“We have met the enemy and he is us.”

I think the ideal running mate for Romney would be a very Conservative, Jewish-American woman, with a Hispanic surname, whose husband is Baptist preacher, a son who married to a Black woman, has 4 kids and is serving in Afghanistan and a daughter who is a Lesbian.
