Folks tend not to bite the hand that feeds them, just as they tend not to care at whose expense their meals are being delivered.

That is the true reason why folks tend to break the political bands that had previously connected them. Not because of their rulers but because they don’t agree and can’t otherwise trust each other to leave one anther alone.(Usually because one side has no intention of leaving the other alone.)

That is the real reason our forefathers had to secede from the British Empire. The people of Britain could no longer be trusted to respect our rights.
