N. Korea denounces Japan's move to deploy destroyers near S. Korea

SEOUL, June 4 (Yonhap) -- North Korea's propaganda Web site on Monday lashed out at Japan's move to deploy Aegis destroyers in international waters between South Korea and China.

The Uriminzokkiri associated Japan's plan with what it claimed was South Korean President Lee Myung-bak's "toadyism" to the United States and Japan, accusing Lee of seeking to collude with Japan in military affairs.

The criticism came days after Japan's Kyodo news agency reported Tokyo plans to deploy the destroyers to waters near the Yellow Sea to improve its ability to detect a North Korean rocket launch.

Japan is sensitive to such launches as previous rockets from the North flew over Japanese territory.

Seoul does not oppose Japan's deployment of Aegis destroyers to international waters in the Yellow Sea, South Korea's Munhwa Ilbo newspaper reported Monday, citing an unidentified senior South Korean presidential official.

Japan's move comes as South Korea seeks to conclude a military cooperation pact with Japan -- the first such military agreement between the neighboring countries since Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.

Japan normalized relations with South Korea in 1965 but has no formal ties with North Korea.

Seoul and Tokyo have been in the final stages of talks for two agreements on logistics and sharing military intelligence. Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin had planned to visit Japan to sign the intelligence-sharing deal last month but the visit was postponed at the last minute.

South Korea and Japan want to share intelligence on missile and nuclear threats from North Korea.

I see a new NK provocation scenario. Instead of attacking U.S. or S. Korean targets, NK can go after the Japanese warship. China won't mind. S. Korea would be reluctant to help. U.S. would probably urge Japan to calm down. On the other hand, Japan could shoot back at the location where N. Korean attack was launched(such as missile site or airfied or naval base.) There are many in Japanese political establishment who want to ditch "Article 9."

In the current situation, N. Korea could calculate that it is less risky to go after a Japanese target and still get the same effect they want to get from such a military provocation.

NK better think long and hard before POing Japan. They may seem peaceful since WW2, but they can and will defend themselves regardless of what America has to say if Kim Dung Shrill gets stupid. And likely not stop at defending themselves.

And I wouldn’t blame them a bit.

I see China as being the real target of this. They have been getting obnoxious towards all the other nations in the region, often extending their “territorial” waters all the way up to the coast of other countries, and trying to snatch contested islands.

This is causing the others, including SKor, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, and even Vietnam to become much more friendly to each other, with an eye to telling China to take a hike and stay on its own turf, not try to steal theirs.

While the Norks are complaining about this, I would level odds that China will say nothing, but is really annoyed by it.

And an underlying current to this is that China has been given fair warning that if it allows Nork to go nuke, then Japan will lead the way in developing nuclear weapons directed at China.

The Japanese use all modern American equipment on their destroyers. Mark 41 VLS, Mark 46 torpedo, Mark 32 torpedo tubes, Mark 42 naval gun, Phalanx CIWS, Harpoon, SM-2, SM-3, Sea Sparrow and ASROC.

The North Koreans have a few frigates and missile craft from the 1950’s and 60’s. Old Soviet and Chinese designs.

Lots of moves and counter moves going on (out there). The chessboard has perhaps two moves (maybe three) before the aggression begins. God save the Queen.

The Japanese do not have Tomahawk cruise missiles on the Kongo and Atago classes, which are basically Japanese Arleigh Burkes. The South Korean version, the Sejong the Great is more heavily armed than our destroyers. In addition to the 80 Mk 41 VLS tubes for SM-2 Block IIIB/IV, they also have a 48 cell VLS launcher dedicated to their Tomahawk analogue, the Hyunmoo-3.
The Japanes and Koreans have these destroyers off North Korea to intercept nuclear missiles.

Except for a few traitors over here, I tend to believe that North Korea is universally hated (not their average people of course) by just about everybody in Japan. They will unite as one country if attacked. North Korea will wish they had never started something. Also recall that there is a mutual defense treaty between the US and Japan, and if they are attacked, the US will be in it as well, not to mention if any US bases in Japan are targetted (well I should say they already are targetted by Pyongyang’s Scuds and Nodongs), but what I mean of course is if they dared launch something at USFJ, Pyongyang is going to end up a poor excuse for a parking lot. And they know it. They are not that precision in my opinion and would back down. A lot of this is just your average DPRK bluster and mind f-ing, and finagling for the big payoff of more rice and medicine.
