Well...I remember a couple of Seminoles(this is in Oregon) and I’m part Cherokee. To your first point, some of the kids didn’t know the name of their tribe. “They’re in Florida.” was as close as they got. I think it was all about steering us to a new guidance counselor with experience and zeal for promoting “native Americans” on a fast track to college admission...affirmative action. Wouldn’t be surprised if the whole thing was NEA initiated.

I am a genealogist, and I can tell you that most small towns in Oklahoma posted their wedding notices in the newspaper during that time. Any Freepers in that area have access to any libraries that have microfilm of a nearby newspaper?
