Former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis of Alabama is officially leaving the party for the GOP, he announced Tuesday.
"Wearing a Democratic label no longer matches what I know about my country and its possibilities, Davis wrote on his website after lamenting that "this is not Bill Clintons Democratic Party".
Davis has been rumored as a possible GOP congressional candidate in Northern Virginia, and in the statement he doesn't rule out the possibility, although his long statement indicates if he runs it could be for either the House or the statehouse and would be in 2014 or afterwards.
The one-time Democratic rising star had grown critical of the party in recent years, was the only African American member of the House to vote against Democrats' health care reform law, and became increasingly vocal about his disagreements with the Democrats after losing a gubernatorial primary in 2010.

SCREW YOU, Artur. You KNEW about this but said NOTHING? Until NOW?????????????????
“this is not Bill Clintons Democratic Party”.
Shows just how bad the Party has become.
Artur Davis makes it official.
This is a surprise to me. I don’t remember his voting record being conservative.
Davis was my congresscritter.
His greatest virtue, as I recall it, is that he was not his predecessor, Earl Hilliard. That being said, he was still a black Democrat, with all that that implies about his voting record.
He left office to run for governor. That’s why he voted against Obamacare. But that didn’t cancel out his voting record with conservative voters, and ticked off mightily his constituency.
I really don’t know what he was thinking.
He’s been making noises for some time now. It’s not that unusual especially after leaving office for someone who you wouldn’t peg as as switcher to in fact switch.
Matthew Martinez of Cali had a liberal record when he switched after losing the rat primary in 2000, that jerk Forbes(?) from Long Island who switched to the rats in 1999 had a conservative record. It makes you think how often people just vote the party line no matter what they think or whether they actually care about anything other their own careers and egos.
Maybe it was getting Whitewashed in the rat primary for Governor that started him on this path.
He always had a kernel of reason, maybe it sprouted.
Yes he’s a RINO now but this is very very embarrassing to the rats. He was one of the new wave Cory Booker kind of Black democrats, the pre-Obama more moderate White voter friendly types. I welcome him.
Like the Lienz Cossacks, these “converts” need to be kept under watch.
(And before anyone starts trying to sharpshoot at me, I'm not comparing the Republican Party to either the Nazis or Communists.)
