GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College Community Education program is offering a training class in June for those interested in obtaining a non-resident Utah concealed firearm permit that is recognized in 31 states.

Valid for five years, the Utah concealed firearm permit is useful for gun owners who want to avoid state-by-state restrictions when traveling.

The four-hour course is offered in two separate sessions: 8 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. June 16 at the college's main campus, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd.

The cost is $100, and those getting a Utah permit will have to pay a $51 registration fee to the state of Utah.

Besides Utah, the license is recognized by Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington state, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

For registration information, call 309-345-3501 or go to the Main Campus in Galesburg.

When I attempted to offer the Arizona concealed carry course at Arizona Western College in Yuma, in 1994, I was told that it was "inappropriate". $100 seems a little steep for a four hour course. I initially charged $79 for a 16 hour course, and it included a copy of Alan Korwin's "Arizona Gun Owners Guide".

Of course, Illinois does not have or recognize any concealed carry permit.

Mine was for $100.00 plus the Utah fee, and a small fee for the photo and included the fingerprinting and FBI background check. The class was so large that the fingerprinting using two stations only ended a bit before the class was over.

It was nice to be among friends.

States Rights, without them there would be no Concealed Carry for the citizens of the US.

There are those rare times that I get a pleasant surprise when checking gun laws.

For a Missouri Concealed Carry permit holder to obtain a Utah non-resident CC permit would only add the state of Wisconsin to the list of states that share reciprocity with Missouri. This information comes from the Missouri Attorney General's webb site.

At the present time there are 11 states NOT honoring a Missouri endorsement to carry a concealed weapon plus Illinois.
