'If you let one [truant student] run loose, what are you gonna' do with the rest of 'em? Let them go too?' asked Judge Moriarty. He had warned her last month to stop missing her classes.
'She goes from job to job, from school, she stays up 'til 7 o'clock in the morning to study' she said. On the homepage of the school's website, there is a warning to students to be vigilant about their attendance.

As a peoples court, many of the cases are rather informal in nature and can be handled as such, said Judge Moriarty. I try to be open and honest with an attitude that says I care.
With a successful tenure in law enforcement including 21 years with the Houston Police Department and 10 years with the Montgomery County Sheriffs Department, Judge Moriarty reminds himself daily, I am a human first and a law enforcer second.
Since the day I decided to run for office, I have always believed in helping my fellow citizens through the law and common decency, Moriarty said.\
Putting in a full day as a JP requires a mental focus that rivals a lot of the physical exhaustion that I have experienced in other work.
Our society is getting more litigious,
turning the peoples court into the lawyers court, Moriarty said. Other trends that judges must face are the continuing decline of parental guidance and reponsibility. We are seeing too many parents serving as
their childrens friends and not their parents, Moriarty said.
This made the news on the KHOU website. Never mind the fact that she is an honor student, taking advanced placement courses, and supporting the family. The jusdege is treating her like she is no different than some punk kid who just sits in a classroom and then skips class to score some drugs.
It fits the question I asked regarding liberals when I was in high school in the early 70’s - Has a liberal become someone who stabs you in the back, cuts you off at the knees, and then says that “it’s for your own good”?
Other trends that judges must face are the continuing decline of parental guidance and reponsibility. We are seeing too many parents serving as
their childrens friends and not their parents, Moriarty said.
Except in this case, your dishonor, the parents have walked out on their duty, and the girl has stepped up to the plate to fill the gap. For this initiative she must be punished. Call the social worker to make sure these children see nothing but more roadblocks. Typical liberal behavior with their “setting up to fail”.
Yes Judge, I DO think this one “truant” needs to be let go, and I think YOU need to be let go as well, at the next election! She is not smoking dope all day or shoplifting at the mall either, you black-robed buffoon!
From the KHOU website comments, which may or may not be true:
Jeannie Birdwell · Abilene Christian University
This judge is out of line, out of control, jaded to his career choice & and an extremely poor example of an authority figure. He jailed my god-daughter the same day for being tardy the prior week. The hard pill to swallow was that she wasnt tardy she was at an ortho appt. & her mother faxed the dr. note to the school. The judges response to my god-daughter when she told him this? “Well your mother should have scheduled appt. after school.” Wow! Really? I didn’t realize it was legal to jail someone for not scheduling medical appts to a judges preference. Not only did he jail her, noone notified her mother she was in jail because technically she’s an adult! So technically she should be able to check herself out of school or hell even drop out of school (which isn’t the case, just making a point) if she wanted. I hope this judge sleeps well at night knowing he made a single mother of 3 ( the kids father was killed in an accident approx. 8 months ago) pay $100.00 to get her daughter out of a locked cell & home safely where she belonged. Nevermind the fact that she missed an entire day of school & exams. The judge said he was going to teach her a lesson & that lesson is this: IF YOU END UP IN THIS MAN’S COURT YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS, YOU ARE GUILTY EVEN IF YOU’RE INNOCENT & YOU WILL MORE THAN LIKELY PAY AN EXTORTION FEE! WAY TO MAKE WILLIS & THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM YOU REPRESENT PROUD!
What we need is more people like her and less judges who put her in jail. Makes me wonder what ever happened to common sense. No wonder this country is in deep you know what.
More punishment for the productive class that comes as the result of the unproductive class.
I am just so angry about this right now.
Petty tyrants are the worst and this judge is among the most
petty. He needs to be introduced to some hemp....woven hemp. We have far too many of his ilk infesting this country.
No compassion, yet verbage that he is exhausted more than from any work he has ever done. I smell some serious personal problems in his life. I wonder if his past coworkers in the police department sensed that something was wrong. And who at the school is processing this crap (if true?)
I, too, live in willis. many of our judges are ex police and justice is way over the top/ I personnally don’t leave at night because they pull you over left and right and the JP, is this guy moriarity.
Can not have someone this age thinking for themselves and making life better for their siblings. They must conform to the system and drink of the milk of the government!!
This justice of the peace ran unopposed and won by default in 2008.
Then, he got investigated for false filings for th eelction commission:

alma, have you noticed the county paper hasn’t said a blip.
Maybe not the paper, but KHOU has three articles about it already one of which is here:
I follow Southeast Asia news because my wife is from Laos, and this story broke in the Hmong news today:
I sent that article to the Willis ISD congratulating them on shaming themselves. Both the school district (money for students) and the judge (I know what’s best and I don’t care about your story) are to blame for this. I wish I could do something concrete.
Let’s see what happens on Tuesday morning.
school’s over and this will blow over by august
This will come to a head on Tuesday morning. The judge will reverse himself.
There’s a petition to support her here:
And also a place for donations here:

Truly sad how upside down this country is becoming!
Judge Lanny Moriarty ....
Liberals Punish good and reward Bad...
This turd sniffer must Be a democrat. or a retarded Rino.
I say lets fire every single Politician,Judge, and Beaurocrat
and Hire Chimps to take their place.......
whats the point of the education if the criminal record nulls whatever the certificate you get from the school
I am so sorry this is happening in my county, Mountgomery County, about twelve miles from me. I didn’t know about this until I read it here.
This county is about 90% Republican and Willis is a real “bubba” part of the county - the beginning of the rural area. The people in Willis are nice people and know what work is. This judge is nuts. Every case is not the same.
I’ll do some checking on him, contact some people. We don’t want judges like him. This is awful.
Wow. My niece would be sentenced to life in prison due to her excessive absences! And there’s not much I can do because her mother allows it. But she still manages a solid B average. What does this say about our schools? I think she’s just bored, actually. (My niece.)
Far too many judges want to change society to their own template with little reference to enforcing the law.
My other fault is that I believe education should challenge the student’s intellect rather than being boring to teachers and students alike.
It is about money not the education of students.
Follow the money trail.
Today is Monday. A facebook page has been set up for Diane and you can contribute there. The money will be in a trust for her so her parents can’t get to it.
I went to facebook and donated. Over $25,000 has been raised so far.
If you can contribute something, please go there and do that. Let’s put a smile on Diane’s face instead of those tears rolling down her cheeks.
I heard it said, by a wise Freeper, that public schools are prisons for those who have committed the crime of being born.
Donations are now over $29.000. I sent an email to Willis High School. It wasn’t nasty, I told them how they could help Diane. I did say she was too smart for Willis High School.
Diane is finishing the 11th grade right now. It’s possible for private Rice University in Houston, to give her place out exams and admit her now. Rice is for really smart kids. My son was one of them, and he took place out exams for Engligh and History and Math and went on to more advanced courses there.
Texas A&M, where I think she said her brother is going, is also for exceptional students. She could take place out exams there and likely be admitted.
I’m not through with this case. As a counselor in a high school, I helped kids get into college and I know how that works. Her high school counselor has dropped the ball if she/he ever had it.
I’ll get in touch with her employer where she lives, and see if I can talk to Diane and give some advice about approaching universities to get in now instead of wasting her time for another year at Willis High School.
Once she is in college, she can regulate her time to attend classes and to work. In college, your time is your own to arrange how you want it to be.
Plus, she is so bright, she will get scholarships to perhaps cover all her school expenses so her work money is her own to help her sister and brother. Hopefully, her brother is also working while going to school.
As of now, Monday, 5:00 pm central time, $30,000 has been raised. Diane has three days of school tests starting tomorrow. The goal for money is $50,000 by the time she finishes these tests. Hard to see how she can concentrate on these tests with all that’s happening to her right now.
Please go to Diane Tran facebook page and donate.
In 2014, when this judge runs again, I will make every effort to see that this barely high school graduate judge, gets kicked out. He can’t even write a decent complete sentence. He should be jailed for being stupid.
You — are an angel. Thank you for any and every effort, even in the least.
Well, maybe my post here and others’ have in some small way helped this young lady. I appreciate your efforts.
Saw this in the Houston newspaper today, Tuesday, so universities are contacting her - this one is from Stanford that takes outstanding sudents:
“Among those reaching out to help support Tran is a school official at Stanford who wants to talk to her about possibly being admitted to one of their summer programs.”
Over $50,000 has now been raised for her.
