Here in Washington State, depending on the circumstances, these two females ran the risk of a justifiable shooting. (The grape drink thrower not so much).
Second degree assault is defined in Washington statutes as doing one of the following:
Intentionally assaulting someone and inflicting
substantial bodily harm.
Assault while attempting to commit a felony.
Etc.

Homicide is also justifiable when committed either:
(1) In the lawful defense of the slayer, or his or her husband, wife, parent, child, brother, or sister, or of any other person in his or her presence or company, when there is reasonable ground to apprehend a design on the part of the person slain to commit a felony or to do some great personal injury to the slayer or to any such person, and there is imminent danger of such design being accomplished; or
(2) In the actual resistance of an attempt to commit a felony upon the slayer, in his or her presence, or upon or in a dwelling, or other place of abode, in which he or she is.

The trouble is, it is one-split second away from some hair-pulling to the car door being opened and having your head tossed to the pavement. But two on one, I think the “one” could easily see that “there is reasonable ground to apprehend a design on the part of the person slain to commit a felony or to do some great personal injury to the slayer or to any such person...”
The anarchists and Aztlaners came with coolers full of rock-hard frozen soda cans. Looks totally innocent. Yet they could be hurled like rocks or bricks, and caused concussions, deep gashes, etc.
But in all the confusion, by the time the police are involved and people figure out the tactic, there are just some “harmless” (full) soda cans on the ground. It's almost impossible to prove later that the can had been pre-frozen to rock-solid, and was intended to cause injury.
Look for this kind of thing if you attend any demo (tea party etc) where the anarchists and communists are going to pull a counter-demo.
