Two men who identified themselves as being from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office in Phoenix went to the Hawaii Department of Health Monday morning requesting verification of President Barack Obama's birth certificate, said a state spokeswoman.
A Hawaii deputy attorney general gave the men information concerning the legal requirements to obtain such a document; the requirements are posted on the Health Department's website. The two men then left the office, Health Department spokeswoman Janice Okubo said.
The two men showed Maricopa County Sheriff's Office badges and identified themselves as Michael Zullo and Brian Mackiewcz, Okubo said. They are "authorized by the Sheriff of Maricopa County, who is conducting an official investigation," a spokesman for the sheriff's office said in an email.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been researching Obama's residency status using a volunteer cold-case "posse," but now has employed a taxpayer-funded deputy, The Arizona Republic reported Monday.
Zullo is a volunteer, the Republic reported, but Okubo said that Mackiewicz presented a business card showing he is with the Threats Management Unit of the sheriff's office.
Arapaio's birth certificate investigation comes as the U.S. Justice Department is suing his office for alleged civil rights violations, including discrimination against Hispanics.
Separately, Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett, who says he is not a "birther," said in a radio interview Thursday that Obama's Arizona ballot status is in question unless Hawaii responds positively to his request under a Hawaii law regarding confirmation of birth certificates.
Hawaii Department of Attorney General spokesman Josh Wisch said Monday the department has been in touch with Bennett since Friday and that he would need to provide legal authority showing his office is "a governmental agency or organization who for a legitimate government purpose maintains and needs to update official lists of persons in the ordinary course of the agency's or organization's activities."
Obama was born in Honolulu on Aug. 4, 1961. Birthers contend Obama was not born in the United States and thus not eligible to be president. The state released a copy of Obama's long-form birth certificate last year, but the release did not satisfy many birthers.
Bennett, a Republican who is reportedly considering a run for governor in Arizona, said Friday he assumes he'll get the confirmation he requested in March from Hawaii officials.

Hey Bennett, don’t assume anything! Demand Hawaii comply with your request - Make more noise about it and most of all get that BC! Do not make your decision about it being legitimate behind closed doors! Show it to the people and let us decide.

The State Attorney General doing an investigation into eligibility needs to prove he has authority as a government agency or organization, and has to prove his legitimate 'government purpose'. Whereas Obama apparently never had to submit any proof whatsoever that he had a legitimate authority when his hypothetical 'real' birth certificate magically appeared upon his demand. It is fairly clear that the entire Hawaii government is corrupt (Such as former Governor Linda Lingle and her two secretive visits with Obama) and of communist ideology.
I took my 15 yr. old son to get his Learners License yesterday, his birthday was on Saturday, we had to return with MORE documentation even though we had a “copy” of his birth certificate, his original social security card AND a proof of enrollment in school signed and certified by his school. Guess what? The “copy” of his birth certificate was not good enough. Has to be the original. Even though I am his Mother and gave birth to the 9 lb 4 oz bundle of joy . . . so I asked that instead of me having to make yet another trip to the safe deposit box IF his passport would suffice and she said YES as long as it was current so I opted for that and we returned home for that since I hadn’t returned them all to the safe deposit box after our spring break cruise. You don’t know how tempted I was to smart off about the birth certificate but given the fact we were at the mercy of the employees of the DMV . . . I did not.
Hope Obama doesn’t have to get an AL driver’s license in Huntsville AL anytime soon OR else he will not have the proper documentation the rest of us unwashed masses must supply.

They will never see the “birth certificate” because there isn’t one. His birth was never “certified” in Hawaii, it was “registered” by his relatives. A common practice at the time for non-Hawaiian born children to gain US citizenship.

We are not “birthers”. . .we have no “beliefs” about Obama’s citizenship status. It is incumbent upon Obama to produce the documents. Based on the information provided on authenticated documents, conclusions will be made regarding Obama’s status. We’re waiting on the documents. . . .waiting far too long, I might add.

0bama effectively released the State of Hawaii when he produced a document he claims to be his Birth Certificate. Almost everyone has a right to verify that what has been represented as an “official” document is real. By refusing the State of Hawaii may have become complicit in the perpetrating of a fraud.
It doesn’t make sense that they are resisting Arizona unless the produced document is in fact a forgery and they are protecting 0bama.
It is a common legal principal, I believe, that once you go public with information that you cannot retreat and beg for privacy.
Can’t anyone just produce the hospital records of where he was born.

Just go about your official duties and obligations as an Attorney General. No need to be apologetic or exculpatory in carrying out your duly authorized actions and responsibilities as a state Attorney General.
Wonder if someone could go to where ever The Messiah got his drivers license, Illinois I would guess? Once there ask for the back up documents that were used to grant the license. That would include a copy of his birth certificate. Might take an FOI request, long shot but possible.

ps: my local county office supplied me with my BC for a mere $10, and they mail them out routinely (so kids can prove their qualifications for Kindergarden and Little League). But maybe the Kenya Kindergarden isn’t as strict? OK everybody, let’s all just relax and go to the back room and form a circle and join hands and say OMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! There’s nothing, nothing at all behind that curtain that we need be concerned about. Nothing. Nada. Nil. Zilch! Zippo!
If true it must mean one thing. Law enforcement still exists and is able to read and understand existing law. It is not about a person, persons a party or anything else.
Further, USC(onstitution) is the supreme law of our land. Disregarding it makes all laws irrelevant.
That's just it. He's not asking for a certified copy to examine. He is only asking for official notice that they have one and that it is legit.
I would settle for his school records. Elementary-College.
