'Tunnel home' owner sues city of Austin (TX)

Two years after his home and the tunnels beneath it were seized by the city, Joe Del Rio is suing.

“The police lied to me and took me out of my house,” said the 72-year-old Del Rio, who spent 36 years serving his country in the Army and Air Force.

In May 2010, code compliance officers responded to neighbor complaints and discovered what they called a series of tunnels dug beneath Del Rio’s home on Canterbury Street in East Austin.

On Friday, Del Rio gave KXAN a tour of the home and says the tunnels were actually a fallout shelter that had been there for decades without any structural issues.

Here are prior stories on this guy's basement where Austin was going to fill it with low-strength concrete and charge the home owner.

Moral to story - Big Brother will confiscate basements in lib Austin. Seriously, east Austin has much more pressing problems than this house.

Don’t tell anyone if you’re building a fallout shelter.

You know what they say. The nicest thing about Austin is how close it is to Texas.

I believe there was a Twilight Zone about a family who had a fallout shelter and when the big alert came, all of their neighbors, who had ridiculed the father, showed up demanding shelter . . . of course being a bleeding heart liberal Hollywood production, the father eventually gave in to his pleading family.

In New England we call those cellars :)

On the video he said, in essence, ‘I let them in, I have nothing to hide”

How many times do you hear people say that type of phrase? thud

I have an idea.

Let us make Travis County Texas, Boulder County Colorado, Cook County Illinois and the District of Columbia their own state. Give them their two Senators and wish them the very best.

I think you’re missing his math on this one. He means put them all together as one state, so 2 dem senators for the lot. With those counties gone, you get at least 4 more rep senators in exchange, from the states that would go completely red with those counties removed.

They would be ONE STATE.

My variation on that is a county based electoral college system. Each county will receive an elector to go to a state convention and elect the senator, presidential electors, etc. Within the county the districts and election processes will remain the same. This will give the sensible people of rural Montana the same say in national politics as the morons in Manhattan.

I also think we should institute a system that bars anyone who receives government money in any way shape or form from voting. This would end the current practice of vote buying.

Ah. Still, it’s still nuts to give this new weird beast two more perpetual democrat senators.
