HOMOSEXUAL RELATIONS and the BIBLE

The interpretive conflict regarding homosexuality and the Bible is a relatively recent phenomenon, between two fundamentally different positions and interpretive schools. Historical/traditional scholarship evidences that the Bible contains laws which prohibit homosexual relations (same gender sexual relations; also referred to as homoeroticism or homogenital relations, or “homosex”), and which are as universal and immutable as laws against illicit heterosexual partners are shown to be, and unlike incest, homosexual relations never were allowed. In addition, the necessary positive sanction of marriage, which is provided explicitly for opposite gender sexual unions, is nowhere established for homosexual unions.

Pro-homosexual polemicists have responded to this problem by asserting all the injunctions against homosexual relations are culture or contextually bound or for other reasons cannot not universally apply today, and or that the Bible is not wholly inspired of God and provides no transcendent universal sexual ethic. In addition, advocates of homosexual relations often propose or assert that homoeroticism and even same-sex marriage can be seen in many close relationships between persons in the Bible.

While few pro homosexual writers concede that the Bible is contrary to same sex behavior, virtually all reject any Biblical censure of it. Author Robin Scroggs states, “Biblical judgments against homosexuality are not relevant to today’s debate.” William M. Kent, a member of the committee assigned by United Methodists to study homosexuality, explicitly denied the inspiration of any anti-homosex passages in the Bible, and their application today. John Boswell stated, regarding the Bible, that "one must first relinquish the concept of a single book containing a uniform corpus of writings accepted as morally authoritative." Episcopalian professor L. William Countryman contends, “The gospel allows no rule against the following, in and of themselves: . .. bestiality, polygamy, homosexual acts,” or “pornography.”

These are only a few excerpts of the over 450,000 word, extensively referenced examination of prohomosexual polemics (which I originally wrote for an online encyclopedia, by God's grace), after seeing the excessive efforts by prohomosexual apologists to combat the Biblical injunctions against homosexual unions and to find sanction for the same. And which testifies to their implicit acknowledgment that Scripture is their ultimate enemy, and thus the importance they place upon silencing its condemnation and forcing Scripture to support them.

Yet due to the wresting of Scripture (2Pt. 3:18) which this requires, their arguments have the effect of negating the Divine inspiration and thus the authority of the very book they both attack and seek to employ.

While recent news focuses upon support in politically high places for joining together what God has placed (sexually) asunder (and Jesus Himself specified it was male and female that God joined: (Mt. 9:3,4), we do not "wrestle against flesh and blood, but against spiritual wickedness in high places," and it is ultimately the devil who seeks to dishonor God by promoting perversity, especially when he can do it in the name of Christ.

And as in the day of Israel, what was sanctioned in the temple sets the moral standard for the nation, and thus the demand that churches recognize homosexual marriage.

Nationally, the moral laws of every nation are based upon a basic ideology which shares some commonalities with others as well as distinctives, and in America that reflected the faith of the basic Christian faith.

But as Daniel Webster prophetically warned,

“Lastly, our ancestors established their system of government on morality and religious sentiment. Moral habits, they believed, cannot safely be trusted on any other foundation than religious principle, nor any government be secure which is not supported by moral habits....Whatever makes men good Christians, makes them good citizens.”

And the widespread practice and sanction of homosexual relations, which is concomitant with other aspects of fleshly living and selfishness, marks the final stages of moral decline going before destruction.

Which provides further impetus for the body of Christ to be distinctively different from the world in purity, love and spirit, as well as faith and doctrine, that as nations fall they may look to Christ, and find refuge in Him, to the glory of God the Father.

And which appeal extends to homosexuals as well, as some of the first Christians formerly were such, (1Cor. 6:9-11) and we all (who are Christians) were disobedient children of wrath (Eph. 2:1-3) before we abased ourselves as admitting so much and trusted the risen Lord Jesus Christ to save us by His sinless shed blood. (Rm. 3:9-25) And as "in many things we offend all" (Ja. 3:2), we yet depend upon that as we seek to walk in the light of Christ.

Thank you for the post.

I teach at a Christian prep school and we have a senior survey course.

The course is mainly how to handle finances and work related issues, but also includes a worldview unit.

Thanks to our “dear leader” it looks as though we need to add at least a discussion on this subject.

Can you suggest any other supplemental readings?

It's wrong according to God, plain and simple! What's to stop these guys from bestiality (which they already do) and multiple wives and husbands?

I wonder how the guy reconciles the sexual purity intent and message of "your body is a temple"...

Freedom not Sodom!


There's freedom in America, the land of the red white and blue;

but there still must be laws, things you just can't do.


You can't marry your sister, your brother, or the family pet;

a sheep, or a goat - at least not yet!


That how is it with homosexuality, what the Bible calls sodomy;

men lying with men as with women, is perversity!


That they're not designed that way, tis easy to perceive,

but yielding to sinful desires, man is soon deceived.


A moral wrong is not a civil right; like the sin itself, that's confusion;

calling evil good and exchanging light for darkness, is sure delusion!


History tells us where this will lead, from societies now in dust,

When a nation casts off the laws of God, and follows it's own lusts.


Promoting a sin which sends one to Hell from an early grave,

dishonors God and robs man of the Life He gave.


There's but one answer: the Risen Jesus gave Himself for our sins;

Repent and believe, then truly follow Him!

And the Lord Jesus invoked that in specifying that opposite gender are what God joined in marriage. (Mt. 19:4)

Also very relevant is the place of the Bible in American education, and i would urge them to examine this:

Even the Unitarian (a religion that effectively denies Christ and the Divine authority of the Bible, but, unlike its immoral form today, at that time it at least overall upheld general Biblical morality) “Father of the Common School,” Horace Mann (May 4, 1796 — August 02, 1859), who became Massachusetts Secretary of Education in 1837, not only understood the impossibility of separating education from religious moral beliefs, but held that it was lawful to teach the truths of the general Christian faith, asserting that the “laws of Massachusetts required the teaching of the basic moral doctrines of Christianity.”

Mann, who supported prohibition of alcohol and intemperance, slavery and lotteries, (http://www.famousamericans.net/horacemann) dreaded “intellectual eminence when separated from virtue”, that education, if taught without moral responsibilities, would produce more evil than it inherited. May His tribe increase, that of the “cry and sigh” ministry of Ezekiel 9:4:

And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.

The lack of prominent men like Webster is a judgment upon this nation.

And thus one of the specious arguments by the PHAs is that “abomination” just refers to things like unclean food, which is refuted in the document.
