Obama's Team of Tech Gurus To Unleash 'Holy Grail' of Digital Campaigning Dashboard, the Democrats' sophisticated new tool, melds data collection with a social aspect to unify volunteers nationwide

Ed Pilkington and Amanda Michel in New York guardian.co.uk, Monday 14 May 2012

Online experts working within both parties have aspired to create the first fully formed digital campaign. Barack Obama's re-election campaign for the White House is poised to launch its secret weapon: an online tool that the campaign hopes will vastly increase its ability to mobilise volunteers and potential voters across the US.

The new tool, called Dashboard, is being seen as the possible Holy Grail of digital political organising, one that has eluded campaign chiefs for years. It is already being road-tested in several of the crucial swing states that Obama must hold onto if he is to remain in office.

The technology has been incorporated into the campaign's website, myBarackObama.com, and is expected to be made available to thousands of staff and volunteers across the country within the next 10 days. Its URL can be found through search, though it remains inaccessible to most Obama supporters until the launch.

For the past eight years, online experts working within both parties, but particularly within the Democratic party, have aspired to create the first fully formed digital campaign. That goal may now be within their grasp.

The hope of Dashboard is that data acquired by volunteers from voters canvassing in Ohio will immediately be synced with that gathered by those running phonebanks in New Hampshire and with the outreach efforts of volunteers at myBarackObama.com, giving campaign bosses a real-time master view of the president's re-election efforts throughout the country.

The Dashboard project is being led by Michael Slaby, one of Obama's digital gurus,...

Call me unimpressed. Campaigns need boots on the ground and hyper active call centers.

“the Democrats’ sophisticated new tool, melds data collection with a social aspect to unify volunteers nationwide “

Sounds sorta creepy.

Very much so, and they're already using it as part of the Obama regimes "Enemies List" of big Romney contributers.

They aim to do all this tracking and organizing yet somehow seem to believe that voter ID is discriminatory.

The only technology they need is that to control the vote count. They may have it as well.

In other news, Jim Robinson, with the help of technical experts, kicked off a digital system which spreads the news of treachery coming from the “liberal” side of the political aisle and which fosters unity and action among the patriots of America.

As a former County Chair, it is my opinion that the hyperactive call centers only burn out volunteers, waste money and irritate the recipient of the call. Personally, I do not answer political calls if I can identify them. Robo calls are the very worst. With a live caller that I usually can identify within 3 seconds, even with a blind caller ID, no one listens. They read from a stupid script and only want money. They receive hangups and irritation.

Organizing on our side does not ever attempt to emulate the successful tactics of the Left. They infiltrate absolutely every group that already exists and then utilize their personal connections to people to influence their vote. When our side organizes something positive that actually makes the Left go into a tizzy by showcasing something they think they own, like youth support, our side ignores it, so it falls into a sound-suppressing memory hole.

Their Wonderkind are always local, usually trust kids paying their own way and when they start any new group, they do it via grants and under the cover of *being good*. Our Wonderkind come straight out from DC and party HQ, follow the ancient play book and shoulder the locals out of the way. These folks on the GOP campaign payroll are surly, hard to reach and impatient with the local ground efforts. They despise the base and make that clear.

The Left makes sure their big local/regional supporters get contracts, great PR and all sorts of perks. Ours may be told their factory will be a photo op and then the offer is withdrawn hours before it is scheduled.

Above are all true experiences that turned me off volunteer local GOP politics forever in 2004.

We will not ever equal them until we somehow regain control of the culture, the media and academe. We had momentum in 2004 and we lost it in 2006 & 2008. The Tea Party regained it in 2010 and they may be our saviors.
