Old Joe was the last one what had a lick of sense and he was a mob connected bootlegger. Are you _hitting me? He thought Hitler was the best thing since slice bread. Roosevelt had to pull him out of the British embassy before he did or said anything more stupid with/about Hitler.

Joe (and he was not alone) was backing what he believed was going to be the winning horse—plus he hated the British guts and would have sided with Satan against them.
