A murder-kidnapping case that prompted a major manhunt ended abruptly Thursday night with Adam Mayes dead and two young girls safe, Mississippi authorities said.
Guntown, Miss., Police Chief Michael Hall said Mayes shot himself after a SWAT team discovered him and moved in.
Alexandria Bain, 12, and Kyliyah Bain, 8, are safe, Hall told the Associated Press.
The children had vanished April 27, when Mayes and his ex-wife, Teresa, traveled to Tennessee from their Guntown home. Teresa Mayes has told Tennessee police that Mayes killed the girls' mother, Jo Ann Bain, and her eldest daughter, Adreinne, 14.
Family friends have told the media that Mayes believed the two younger children were his.

Thank the Lord the girls are safe! We have been following this terrible story here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
What an awful thing, this dirtbag. At least we will not have to house him in prison.
The girls just arrived in memphis at the childrens hospital
Bravo!
I’ve only followed this story through the headlines, but I thank the Good Lord these girls are safe.
Did you put out a ping? Thank you Lord for these two girls!
Good
Great ending. It is nice to hear of living children at the end of a hostage/kidnapping story.
I had wondered why he killed the mother and oldest girl and didn’t the other two. Now I see he thinks they were his.
Obama just gained another vote.
Praise the Lord.
‘Guntown, Mississippi’, you just can’t make this stuff up.
And I love happy endings. :)
