The US has been secretly releasing captured Taliban fighters from a detention center in Afghanistan in a bid to strengthen its hand in peace talks with the insurgent group, the Washington Post reported Monday.

The "strategic release" program of high-level detainees is designed to give the US a bargaining chip in some areas of Afghanistan where international forces struggle to exercise control, the report said.

Under the risky program, the hardened fighters must promise to give up violence and are threatened with further punishment, but there is nothing to stop them resuming attacks against Afghan and American troops.

Its amazing that a bunch of illiterate, pre-Medieval tribesman...

This is exactly why they are being released. Most of them have no clue about 9/11 or international terrorism and think they are just fighting another set of invaders out to kill them.

The Bush government released many of them too.

Uh,....you do realize the only reason they beat the Soviets was because we gave them Stinger missiles, right?

Most of the deaths of the Soviets happened not due to Stinger missiles but due to regular gunfire, RPGs and IEDs. The numbers went up and the Soviets withdrew.

Could that be due to a lack of air cover after 1987? I remember reading that the Soviets had pretty much total control of the country by late 1986. The insurgents (there were no Taliban then) were basically restricted to the mountain tops. Then came the Stingers, which neutralized Soviet airpower and helped turn the tide.

Also, I’m sure the Soviets weren’t a big believer in “hearts and minds” counter-insurgency. In other words, they didn’t hold back.

Chip and then release them. Two chips, one to monitor their whereabouts and the second to detonate when the time is right.
