I believe it is Whittaker Chambers who made note of the phenomenon among Communists to despise those we would describe as liberals more than they despise conservatives. His use of the word "reactionaries" is very revealing and all the more revealing in that he expresses the generally held belief among Communists that that attitude can be ascribed to "ignorance.
