ATF Publishes Misleading Trace Data From Mexico

WESLACO - Federal agents say they are on the trail of more than a hundred illegal gun buyers in South Texas tonight.
This is six months after a new requirement was added for gun dealers in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says agents realized they weren't tracking high-powered rifles.
"The weapon of choice we weren't seeing reported is rifles," says Franceska Perot, an ATF spokesperson.
She adds two out of every three new cases the ATF opened in the last six months in the four border states were from Texas. The spokesperson adds it's a very good possibility that the cases are connected with cartels trafficking guns.
Perot tells us McAllen and Brownsville has always had the highest numbers of trafficking cases.
New numbers released by the Mexican government show 68,000 guns they found in the past five years were traced back to the U.S. The weapons were all found at the scene of crimes in Mexico. Some were found at cartel shootings or raids on illegal gun warehouses.
"Our end goal is to stop these guns from being used in U.S. or Mexico," explains Perot.
The ATF believes the new requirement for gun dealers will help them stop illegal gun buyers before they ever make it across the border.
"Without these reportings, we have to rely on waiting for a gun to be recovered in a crime, which is too late somebody has already lost a life. Or we have to wait until we do an annual inspection at a firearm dealer," says Perot.
The ATF knows the new requirement will make the cartels change the way they do business.
Meanwhile, some gun dealers say the ATF's new rule is burdening them with even more paperwork. One gun shop owner doesn't think the requirement is going to help ATF agents get to the cartels.

The don't tell you most of them were US manufactured weapons that were sold to the Mexican government, and the sales approved by Washington. The cartels end up with them when Mexican soldiers desert and take the guns with them.
This makes my “spidey sense” start to tingle.

You gun dealers just DO NOT understand. The whole idea here is to so overwhelm the cartels with paperwork and bureaucratic red tape, that they will be stretched thin and burdened and tormented to the point of collapse.
Nice end goal, but was that before or after you all smuggled THOUSANDS OF MACHINE-GUNS TO DRUG DEALERS?
How can they do that, and then have the brass to continue speaking in this RIDICULOUS manner?
Because they UNDERSTAND that the liberal US media is a de-facto extension of the Obama Regime; if the average Joe knew about Fast & Furious then the criminal ATF would know they could never get away with this.
They are trying to take the heat off of fast & furious by having a TX offensive.

How can you have a federal law that only applies to 4 states?
That's how I feel with the out-of-control medical system - and it's only going to get a whole lot worse if Obamacare doesn't get overturned, defunded, reversed.
ATF is corrupt to the core.
This part I trust. The part about these particular guns headed to Mexico is the part I don't trust. Another part I don't trust is ATF going after the dealers and buyers because of some probably little known "new and improved Friday evening news dump" regulation. Another part I don't trust is AFT will use this as reason to go through dealers' books like they're doing in Alaska. Chipping away, chipping away.

This really does not make sense. These cartels have millions of dollars and can easily buy cheap AK-47’s by the truck load for less than a hundred bucks a pop from south America if they want. If they want AR-15 it’s relatively easy to machine the lower out of a chunk of aluminum with any decent CNC mill. The uppers aren’t tracked, you can buy those by the truck load without any ATF paper work. I have to believe that someone down in Mexico has figured this out. Hell any machine shop on either side of the border could make these by the thousands, to MIL specs if so desired, just take a few 10’s of grands to set up and you’re in business.
If it is this hard to stop US guns from entering mexico, what is the ATF or Mexican gov’t doing to slow the smuggling of Chinese arms into either Mexico or the US?
The BATFE needs to be repurposed to keep any and all references and images of Alcohol, Tobaccy, Firearms and Explosives out of TV and the Movies. That’d kill two birds with one law.
