Using a hammer as a weapon, a "complete stranger" with no significant criminal history allegedly chose a family at random and attacked them in their home, killing a woman and her daughter, in a brutal crime that left investigators both baffled and aghast.

Other salient points covered in the original article:

• A mother and daughter were raped and killed. The father beaten senseless.

• Two brothers were untouched. They remained in the house for 24 hours. Police were called when one of the boys told his teacher at school what happened.

• Nothing was stolen from the house. Police know of no motive for the attack.

• Shortly before this incident, a 50 year old woman was chased from a public street by the same man into the desert where she was beaten and raped.

• The alleged assailant is nailed in both attacks with DNA evidence.

• An AP photo in the article shows the alleged assailant is Black. The family attacked are, according to their surnames, most likely White Hispanics. The race of the raped woman was not given.

No word yet on whether prosecutors intend to charge the alleged assailant with a hate crime.

Also no word on whether Rev. Jessie and Rev. Al are on their way to Vegas to demand justice for the victims.

A murder with a hammer is particularly violent, especially if the murderer disfigured the faces and heads of the victims, which also shows particular hateful animus.

The boys were 9 and 4, so I guess the 9 yr old must have gone to school. I think the boy was probably so traumatized he didn’t know what to do and he probably thought he was protecting his younger brother until he got to some place where he knew adults would help him.

It’s also possible that the attacker told the boys not to leave the house or call for help. The father was also at home, but he had been beaten in the head and left for dead.
