Westfield Concerned Citizens continue fight against proposed Pioneer Valley Energy Center

The issuance earlier this month of a federal Environmental Protection Agency air quality permit for the proposed $400 million natural gas-fired electric generating plant has not deterred continued opposition by Westfield Concerned Citizens.

“Westfield Concerned Citizens along with residents from neighboring communities concerned about the environmental impact of the plant are not satisfied with this outcome,” said WCC founding member Mary Ann Babinski.

Babinski said WCC is “assessing future efforts” in opposition to the plant, adding” there is an appeal process to this permit award.”

“This is a very important issue to us and we are considering an appeal of the decision to award the permit,” Babinski said.

The final air quality permit needed for the project, originally proposed in late 2007, was received April 12 from the federal Environmental Protection Agency, project manager Matthew A. Palmer announced.

That completed the federal and state environmental permitting process allowing developers to focus their attention on finance and construction of the proposed 400 megawatt generating plant at its site off Ampad Way.

Babinski said “WCC members are even more determined to stop construction because the more we have learned about the issues surrounding this facility the more we recognize the facility’s harmful public health, safety and environment impacts. There is no need for the energy this plant will generate.

“We had petitioned the EPA for a health impact assessment but it determined that it was not necessary,” Babinski said adding WCC will continue to position that operations to generate electricity “will not be clean. Clean energy does not come from a smokestack.”

Babinski said the group will not sway from its concerns over air pollutants, the transporting and storing of heating oil and chemicals involving plant operations.

There is no need for the energy this plant will generate.

How do they expect to charge their electric cars? How many use natural gas or oil to heat their house? How many use electricity 24/7 and not just when it is sunny or windy?

It could be running on unicorn farts and fairy dust and there would still be protests.

mASS. Realized that when I went to the link. Reason I asked first, is that I have a good friend in Westfield, NJ, and he’s a civic leader in the community. Thought I might get him involved.

Ya....because many energy companies are known for building 400 million-dollar plants just for sh!ts-and-giggles.

They're concerned about storing heating oil? I'd bet that half of them heat their homes with that same oil. Ridiculous, nasty, NIMBY, liberals.

Geez I hate 'em.

Why don’t they do what Los Angeles does when it needs more electricity, build the plant in Utah? Too bad Obama put most of the coal used by the IPP off limits.

Westfield used to be a nice place to live, good and hard working people. Now it’s just commie scum, for the most part.

Lots of soccer fields.

Not quite. It is acros the Conn. River from Springfield. Smith and Wesson manufactures firearms in Westfield.

The cesspools known as Amherst (the H is silent unless you're an outsider) and Northampton are in the next county north. Six miles west of Amherst on route 116 is the black hole of moonbattery known as Hampshire College where AlGore just spoke to the trolls.
