Donations pour in to Trayvon Martin's killer ($204,000)
CNN ^ | 26 April 2012 | CNN Staff

(CNN) -- The lawyer for the neighborhood watch leader who fatally shot unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida, said Thursday that his client has received about $200,000 from supporters. Orlando lawyer Mark O'Mara told CNN's "AC360" that George Zimmerman told him Wednesday of the donations as they were trying to shut down his Internet presence to avoid concerns about possible impersonators.

"He asked me what to do with his PayPal accounts and I asked him what he was talking about," O'Mara told Anderson Cooper. "And he said those were the accounts that had the money from the website he had. And there was about 200, $204,000 that had come in to date."

Excellent. We will have to back these people up if the are put in Zimmerman’s position. It’s the only way they won’t be ruined by defending themselves.

I dont have tv, but why is this lawyer on today? Any new developments? If not,he should be unseen and unheard. I dont have a good feeling about him.Was he a “tv” lawyer, like a ‘tv’doctor? He should know every detail about George by now. Just heard yesterday about a website with donations?
Not buying it. I knew about it two weeks ago, clicked on it and read the info. I think the previous lawyer was better.

Alan Dershowitz, pick up the white courtesy phone!!

Disagree. O’Mara is a good attorney. Maybe he should have said a “rather large amount” but no harm. In fact it fires up Zimmerman supporters. I’ll kick in some more when the new site is ready. He is going to disclose to the judge anyway.

I appreciate your comment. I still would not say that Zim “killed” the man.
Semantics is the universe of the Justice system.
By way of example, one of the Commandments is “thou shalt not steal”.
Therefore, if I am accused of stealing and am acquitted in trial, am I still a “stealer”. Was I ever a “stealer”?
NO.
It works the same way with “thou shalt not kill”.
Again, IANAL. But I could play one on TV, if anyone wants to offer.

-- If it get thrown out will this cover the costs? --

He's lost from the disruption to his life, kicked out of school for safety concerns, etc. Then there is the bail, out of pocket; living "in secrecy" and any transportation associated with that, plus court and lawyer fees. Lawyer fees add up fast.

I'd guess that a quarter of a million is close to covering all that if you look just at the time from the incident to, assuming he gets immunity, to the immunity grant. He may have money left over, he may be a little short, could go either way. It doesn't cover losses going forward, and it doesn't cover the cost of mounting defamation suits.

O’Mara is a good attorney. Those first ones were not helpful at all. I expect he will be making strategic appearances from time to time. He is going to be quite busy because I think he gets discovery information starting tomorrow.

IIRC, Mr. O’Mara is working pro bono and the lawsuits against NBC, Al Sharpton, the Black Panthers and a raft of other individuals & organizations should make Mr. Zimmerman a wealthy man. Richard Jewell X20 at least.

He's supposed to get everything the state has, by tomorrow. The only things he won't have is his own deposition's of prosecution's witnesses, which he is entitled to take after learning their identity.

There is a reciprocal discovery duty, where he has to give up his list of witnesses and the right (to the prosecutor) to depose them.

And yes, this is a busy time in the case.

There is a hearing tomorrow on the press motions to unseal the files in the court. I think the court has evidence from the prosecution that includes witness identification, that we haven't seen yet. Maybe DeeDee's sworn statement. Judge Lester wants everything the prosecutor provided to the court to be made public ASAP - witness ID being the only thing he is willing to keep out of the public eye.

No, your analogy is incorrect.

There fact of your having stolen was not established by confession and that was the question to be determined at trial, but there Zimmerman has confessed that Trayvon died from Zimmerman’s actions and that fact is not in question.

Therefor he is a “killer”, whether he is convicted of murder or not. “Alleged” is an adjective that only applies to facts that have not been established.

one of the Commandments is “thou shalt not steal”.

I believe it's originally "thou shalt not commit murder".

By way of definition, analogies aren’t either correct or incorrect.
I will say it again, IANAL. Are you?

“Whatever happened to the days when the word “alleged” was required in this type of reporting?”

That is still used, just not for conservatives or white people.

Well, good, i hope so. As long as he’s zeroed in on proving
george’s right to defend himself and not on which media interview is next. And if he proves that, of course, there’s
no trial, only riots i guess.

Good luck George and prayers to you and your family.

Assuming the state turned in more than we have already seen, and did so on April 12, I think we'll see that tomorrow afternoon. Lester has been redacting, and giving prosecution and O'Mara opportunity to check his work. The hearing is to announce what's already been done, or give a time frame for completing it. I don't think the redaction chore is complex in this case, and it was easily done and reviewed in a matter of a day.
