The United States is less violent today than at any time in the last 20 years -- Maine was the least violent state and Louisiana the most violent, a group says.
The United States Peace Index, produced by Institute for Economics and Peace, found Cambridge, Mass., the most peaceful metropolitan area and Detroit the most violent.
The index analyzes peacefulness at the state and city levels, via five indicators: The number of homicides, number of violent crimes, the incarceration rate, number of police employees and the availability of small arms.
There were improvements in all indicators from the 2011 to the 2012 Index. The national homicide rate decreased by 3.78 percent, the violent crime rate fell 6.03 percent and the total number of state prisoners fell by 0.6 percent.

Leftie organizations always give themselves away.
What a crock.
Guess which areas have a high percentage of Holders People and which have a low percentage?
Looks to me like they have this all basackwards. Wonder why they didn’t include New York, Illinois or California in their stats.
Wouldn't it have been a whole lot simpler and more honest to count just the first two -- that is, the actual violence -- as "violence"?
But then, the "Institute for Economics and Peace" might not have gotten the result they wanted...
Lets see you’re stats?
Mmmmm ...
This requires further study.

I would imagine both states have fairly lax gun laws, I know Maine does. The difference is New Orleans. That city is a wretched hive of scum and villainy.
When you look at a break down of crime, it is not a surprise the states that are 80-90 percent white are less violent.

Yep.
When you look at a break down of crime, it is not a surprise the states that are 80-90 percent white are less violent.
That’s a fact.
It’s safe because people are scared to go out after dark for fear of the two ugly state senators and that one gaze into their craven heads would turn them into zombies in name only or just turn them into traditional stone.
Yep, it’s a safe state.
I’m sure there are characteristics of each state that could explain this. But I’ve thought about it for hours and I just can’t figure it out.
The difference is demographics. LA is 32% black, whereas ME is 1% black. All of the southern states are more crime-ridden than the rest of the nation because %-wise they have way more blacks.

The stereotype is that southern whites are violent. The truth is that they were more prone to vigilantism in the past, whereas blacks everywhere tend to commit 8x as many crimes on a per capita basis. Obviously black criminals are a small minority of the black population, but these criminals do account for about 50% of the crimes in the country, despite blacks only being 12% of the population.
Louisiana:
Total Pop. = 4,482,646Maine:Black Pop. = 1,451,944
Black Pop. As % of Total = 32.4 %
Total Pop. = 1,294,464Black Pop. = 6,760
Black Pop. As % of Total = 0.5 %
Wait, Louisiana or New Orleans?
Because New Orleans is a real damn special kind of Hell hole, ain’t nuthin’ else like it.
We live out in the sticks in Alaska, everybody has a gun with them at all times come this time of year; hasn’t been a murder in 30 years and that guy was drowned by his drunk buddies; not an Afri Amer within 300 miles of our community, no crime what so ever. The Indians get drunk, but no problems. I couldn’t imagine what I read about the urban areas of the USA nowadays.
The least violent - “Metropolitan Peace Index Results
1 Cambridge-Newton-Framingham, MA”
Not Cambridge with Boston? No manipulation of the data here. /sarc
I think this lefty organ maybe out of Cambridge.
