Think about the postal workers when you were growing up, versus what you see today.
Boy, is THAT ever a spot-on observation. I know some retired letter carriers in their 70's and 80's who took pride in their job as professionals, and always wore the uniform neatly and proudly as if they were in the police force or the military.
In contrast I had an interaction with a postal worker the other day who not only looked like a disheveled street person, but who also seemed just dimly aware of her own existence.

I know her name. She’s a supervisor. Probably beaten down doing entirely too many route evaluations in a single month. Tell her she needs to buy some more shoes.
