Proposed Law Would Force Churches to Host Gay Weddings

Apr 23, 2012 By Todd Starnes Religious liberty groups are blasting a proposed ordinance that would force churches in Hutchinson, Kan. to rent their facilities for gay weddings and gay parties.

The Hutchinson City Council will consider adding sexual orientation and gender identity to the protected classes in the city’s human relations code. They are expected to vote on the changes next month.

According to the Hutchinson Human Relations Commission, churches that rent out their buildings to the general public would not be allowed to discriminate “against a gay couple who want to rent the building for a party.”

Meryl Dye, a spokesperson for the Human Relations Commission confirmed to Fox News that churches would be subjected to portions of the proposed law.

“They would not be able to discriminate against gay and lesbian or transgender individuals,” Dye said. “That type of protection parallels to what you find in race discrimination. If a church provides lodging or rents a facility they could not discriminate based on race. It’s along that kind of thinking.”

Matthew Staver, chairman of the Liberty Counsel Action, told Fox News the proposed law is “un-American.”

“It is a collision course between religious freedom and the LGBT agenda,” Staver said. “This proposed legislation will ultimately override the religious freedom that is protected under the First Amendment.”

I said this would happen if the right to “marriage” was given to them. Not many agreed with me.

This is nothing. Wait until Catholic Chaplains on military bases are told to perform marriage ceremonies or get tossed off the bases.

Imagine a military with no Chaplains.

It’s coming as sure as the sun rises.

This is happening in Kansas? I’d expect it to be somewhere in California.

"What it means is that they will stop renting to anybody."

No, just stop renting to non-members of the Church.

IIRC this all began with the Civil Rights Act. It wasn't enough to ban racial discrimination by government. The law stepped into private associations.

Sorry, if I do not wish to do business or associate with whomever, on whatever criteria I wish to use, it should be my decision and not the d@mn government.

As a Christian I could NOT perform /nor allow such blasphemy be allowed desecrate Sacred Ground. If Hutchinson KS chooses to REPROBATE and make all there be as Sodom or like unto Gomorrah it is high time for the righteous to hear the prophet and “Come out of her My people!” God knows how to provide salvation to the righteous but Hutchinson KS ought consider what will happen when God cannot find even ten righteous men in that wicked City?

Several years ago our congregation already adopted a resolution that we will only allow use of our building to church members, or those whom are sponsored by members, in anticipation of Maryland allowing same sex marriage.

No, it began with a false interpretation/perversion of the Civil Rights Act.

I still don’t understand this need, both by apostate Catholics and the government, for the sacrament of Matrimony! Marriage, so far as most governments are concerned,is a civil union, and those governments accept reception of the sacrament as proof of the civil union (although France and perhaps other European countries require a separate civil ceremony). There can’t be any question at all that this administration, along with the gay-lesbian community, need the complicity of the Church to accomplish their social-engineering ends. And it’s not going to happen.

My club's hall isn't handicapped accessible. So we only rent it out to “members”.

That’s easy enough to deal with... Church Facilities may only be rented to active members in good standing.

Most rentals are to civic organizations that at least 1 member of the churhc is part of anyway... so problem solved, heretics stifled,

That and you sue the city for violation of the freedom of association and freedom of religion clauses for damages in the meantime.

It’s all about the new, all-encompassing tool the Leftists have called “public accommodation.” Now, they can deem anything they want a public accommodation, and they have full control.
