I absolutely love Free Republic, for it is an invaluable resource for conservatives. However, and no disrepsect intended, why does it require the hundreds of thousands of dollars that are donated every year? I’ve helped run websites and I’m curious to what this money goes to.

"Everybody I know has big butts..."

Care to share the names of those websites and thier code bases so we can confirm your contention?

A lot of it goes to buying beer and pizza for ME.

And cigarettes. There's an allotment for ammunition used
at the range and an occasional trip to the Cafe East buffet.

Why do you ask?

Uhm:

Salary to live on.

Software upgrades.

Hardware replacement and upgrades.

Disaster contingencies.

Backup services and hardware.

DNS

Trips on behalf of Conservatives to major candidates or leaders of causes we care about.

ETc, etc, etc....

LOL

Just a cultural joke JR. Don’t let that lightning near me.

I'm just curious, are the websites you help run among the top 1000 most-trafficked websites in the nation?

I work for a company that has a website that isn't even close to the top 1000 and yet the costs are very substantial. Thousands of dollars a month just for the bandwidth. That does not include the hardware, the labor required to run it and renting the space required for the data center.

I assume that John Robinson still runs this website - he'd command a six-figure salary to do this in the private sector and he'd probably have a staff under him to boot.
