ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — A former Louisiana congressman who infamously was caught with $90,000 in cash hidden in his freezer will have to begin serving a 13-year bribery sentence within the next two weeks, a judge ruled Friday.

Democrat William Jefferson, who represented parts of New Orleans for nearly 20 years, was convicted and sentenced back in 2009 for taking roughly $500,000 in bribes and seeking millions more in exchange for using his influence to broker business deals in Africa.

But he has been free on bond, living in New Orleans while appealing his conviction.

I predict a pardon on humanitarian grounds, probably in January.

Come on in to the jailhouse “within the next two weeks....”

Or whenever you want. You were only convicted and sentenced two years ago!

Whole lot of those. I think the entire notion of presidential pardons is too close to the was a king would rule. They should be eliminated entirely.

This was when I realized that the Republicans were no better than the Democrats when it got right down to rooting out official corruption.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/22/AR2006052201080.html

Republican leaders, who previously sought to focus attention on the Jefferson case as a counterpoint to their party’s own ethical scandals, said they are disturbed by the raid. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) said that he is “very concerned” about the incident and that Senate and House counsels will review it.

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) expressed alarm at the raid. “The actions of the Justice Department in seeking and executing this warrant raise important Constitutional issues that go well beyond the specifics of this case,” he said in a lengthy statement released last night.

“Insofar as I am aware, since the founding of our Republic 219 years ago, the Justice Department has never found it necessary to do what it did Saturday night, crossing this Separation of Powers line, in order to successfully prosecute corruption by Members of Congress,” he said. “Nothing I have learned in the last 48 hours leads me to believe that there was any necessity to change the precedent established over those 219 years.”

Yep, I remember Frist and Hastert questioning the methods used. I support it and if it was a Repub that was busted I’d be just as glad that a corrupt politician was taken taken down.

The judge is still going to spot him a 2 week head start.

This investigation started in March of 2005.....

It is now past March 2012

The wheels of justice turn mighty slow ....

If this was you or I we would probably already out for good behavior ....having served our time ....

Damn vermin ....

Precisely, and the more connected or the higher in government the slower the wheels of justice turn.

This corrupt turkey was caught red handed and this is what happened, damn vermin is correct and sadly he may just get pardoned.
