There is no “good” explanation for this story. It is either evidence of massive corruption in the SS ranks or a massive setup job to destroy these agents.
There’s either a tinfoil hat explanation or more likely some sort of institutional breakdown leading to demoralization of the group. Looking through history, you’ve seen this before in places where there is a lack of moral leadership from the top or long-term situational stress leading to demoralization and breakdown of discipline. It would be curious to know exactly where the stress is coming from...
