Hennepin County takes down U.N. flag

The United Nations flag came down outside the Hennepin County Government Center last week after commissioners unanimously voted to fly only the U.S., Minnesota and county flags over the red-brick plaza facing Minneapolis City Hall.

Here's a small ray of hope in Minnesota.

I'll say! Hennepin County is slightly to the right of Berkeley politically.

I'm sure there is more behind this story such as good conservative activism to quietly put a little fear into the commission.

Who's idea was it to fly the UN flag to begin with?

While I agree on the UN building being declared "blighted" and demolished...

It still doesn't tell me who in Hennepin County thought it'd be a good idea to fly the UN flag in Minnesota.

The U.N. banner first went up in the plaza in 1986, when the County Board voted 4 to 2 to fly it alongside the U.S. and state flags. The resolution was sponsored by former Commissioner John Derus. Commissioner Randy Johnson, the only current board member who was on the board then, abstained from voting.

Walter Mondale ♥s him some UN. He gushed about how great it was to come to St. Paul to attend Macalester College and see the UN flag flying right next to the US one. Maybe he had something to do with this.

We were in Colorado at Christmas and the first thing my three-year-old grandson noticed was that they had the wrong flags flying. Asked what he meant, “They should only have the American flag, the Texas flag, the Don’t Mess with Me flag and the Home Depot flag.”
