Predictably Predictable

By the time polls closed Tuesday in Wisconsin, Rick Santorum was already in his home state of Pennsylvania, where he is scheduled for three campaign appearances today in Carnegie, Hollidaysburg, and Mechanicsburg. Meanwhile, the media were gearing up to promote the "inevitability" of Mitt Romney, who was predictably the winner of primaries in Wisconsin, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Santorum wasn't even on the ballot in D.C. and had not campaigned in Maryland, instead devoting the past 10 days -- following his March 24 Louisiana victory -- to an all-out push in Wisconsin.

The outcome of Tuesday's primary in the Badger State was in some sense predictable, a repeat of the primaries Feb. 28 in Michigan and March 6 in Ohio: Santorum campaigned hard and came close, but was ultimately unable to overcome the Romney campaign's vast advantages. In the past 10 days, the former Massachusetts governor rolled out endorsements from Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson and Rep. Paul Ryan, as well as former President George H.W. Bush and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a Tea Party favorite who is almost every Republican's top pick for the vice-presidential nomination. And once more -- as in Michigan, Ohio, and other key states -- Romney's campaign and his allied "super PAC," Restore Our Future, unleashed an overwhelming flood of attack ads against Santorum. It is estimated that the pro-Romney forces spent more than $3 million on advertising in Wisconsin, outspending Santorum and his super PAC by 4-to-1.

“That was perhaps predictable, too, because Krauthammer and the other Fox News panelists surely know that if Santorum can manage to win Pennsylvania and fight on into May, the inevitable Romney may not be as inevitable as some pundits have predicted. According to an analysis of Republican delegate math published Tuesday in the New Yorker, it is currently projected that Romney will complete the primary campaign just shy of the “magic number.” Unless Santorum can somehow be pushed out of the race soon, there remains the possibility that the fight for the GOP nomination will go all the way to the August convention in Tampa. And in his Tuesday night speech in a suburb of Pittsburgh, Santorum signaled that he doesn’t intend to quit now.

“Pennsylvania and half the country have yet to be heard,” he told his home-state supporters. “We’re here to make sure their voices will be heard in the next few months.”

Mark said “What Romney has done by his carpetbombing is..he has weakened the Republican party and those emotionally tied to Gingrich or Santorum are seeing these attack ads “Paid for by Mitt Romney” and they are ticked.” Mark said “What do we do to help him????”

Romney : 346,279
Santorum : 289,648

There stood 56,631 votes between the two of them in all of Wisconsin. How many of those were from the counties of Kenosha, Racine, and Milwaukee (you know, along the runway to and from Illinois)? In 2008 Kenosha carried Obama over McCain by 8%. Racine carried Obama by 7.5%. Milwauke carried Obama by 36%. Which of these counties is going to break for Romney over Obama in 2012? Not one. The most liberal area on the Wisconsin county map has picked our candidate, Romney, whom they will not carry water for in November. We should have a rule that only the counties that actually carried a conservative during the general election should be allowed to choose the conservative candidate in the primary season. Or we should give those three counties to Illinois. Either way is good. Santorum had a good run here -- and if a deal had been struck with Gingrich already for his 45,944 votes ... it would have been a great run. They did well and I am not disappointed with Wisconsin overall. It's only the south east corner that is a persistent, and large, problem. Don't count on the rest of the state being too helpful with Romney in November.

Doesn’t anyone else wonder why the networks called WI so early when it ended up being just a 4% win?

I will absolutely guarantee you that they would have never called it that early if Rick had it by that margin. It would have gone on til the wee hours of the morning hoping for a Mitt win.

Good piece on Romney's weakness and the solid challenge Santorum is putting up.

The most liberal area on the Wisconsin county map has picked our candidate, Romney, whom they will not carry water for in November.

Its been that way pretty much everywhere outside the east coast states. In Michigan, Santorum won 57 counties and Romney won 26 counties and they split the congressional districts at 7 each with Romney winning the Detroit districts.

As of last week, Santorum had won more than 900 counties and Romney had won less than 500. Rush Limbaugh picked it up early on when he said that Romney is winning like a liberal.

Rush: Romney is winning like a liberal

I am glad I listened to Mark Levin tonight. Fox News and Drudge have been shameless pushing Romney. I bet Gingrich and Santorum have been talking behind the scenes. Hannity hinted about them teaming up for the conservative cause. Gingrich will be on Hannity tonight.

Fox News and Drudge are always shamelessly pushing Romney.

I think it's time for Rick and Newt to talk teamwork.

The wishful thinking in this article can be seen in McCain’s point that some conservative states have yet to vote. That’s true, but some much larger non-conservative states like NY and Cal still haven’t voted. Santorum will be crushed in states like those.

Romney does indeed have the nomination wrapped up. It’s time for us all to deal with it.

Not sure what happened to Newt being on Hannity tonight. Oh well. I saw Zimmerman’s father on Hannity. Things sure are getting interesting regarding that case. Obama racists stepped in it choosing a Democrat who did a lot for blacks and who has a father who is reaching out to Fox News to get his message out.

I listened to Mark Belling on WISN today and it confirms what I already knew. Rick lost to Mittens here not because of the voters but because of the RNC.
Ryan and Johnson’s endorsements caused many (callers) to change their minds at the last minute.

Mittens only won here by 4%.
Rick spent days here criss crossing the state and meeting and talking with voters.
Mittens breezed in for a photo shoot at Cousins subs..gave out free subs as bribes. It honestly looked like a bad SNL skit.

I am very angry that our state is now is the lose column for Sen. Santorum when if the big fat RNC had stayed out of the business of WE THE PEOPLE, he would have carried WI.

Rick is a soldier and we are his army.

I’m proud to have met him and his wonderful family this week.
They worked so hard and were so gracious.

See my other post on this thread.

Love you, Guenie.

No way! I hope they both stay in until Tampa. I’m sick to death of being told what to do, when to breathe, cough or spit by the talking heads who think we just need to get in line and shut up. If everybody else wants to sell out to Romney, go for it. I’m holding out. I voted for Newt, but would gladly support Santorum. Romney would be a hard sell. McCain, but worse, actually. McCain was pro-life and gave us Sarah. I see Romney in this for Romney only! Screw America!
