NAVIGATION

Navigation of a ship at sea is, in principle, a very simple matter: you plot a course between where you are and where you want to be, and let the propeller muscle the ship through the water. As simple as that seems, it won’t happen without another very important element: the rudder! The rudder performs its quiet, steady work, unshaken by the tremendous pressures directed against it. And it must hold the true course without deviation.

The navigation of a human life is also, in principle, a very simple matter. As with a ship, there must be motivation and direction. Sea service men and women have shown no shortage of drive, but far too many who abound with energy have experienced the tragic results of inattention to their moral compass.

When a ship drifts off course, the order “Mind your helm!” quickly follows: Pay attention to your rudder’s position! The same order in your personal life.....“Pay attention to moral attitudes and actions".....is a call to mind the moral helm in your life. This internal rudder must be able to withstand the powerful forces that will otherwise constantly push you off your safe and proper course.

The proven moral and spiritual values of our heritage provide excellent tools to help you sail a true course, whatever the state of the seas.

A New View Of Change

People hate change, or so I hear. But the change we generally resist is the kind that we think will make our situation worse rather than better. We eagerly change jobs when it means higher pay and more influence. We happily move to a bigger house in a better neighborhood. So it’s not change in general that we hate; it’s change that involves loss—sometimes physical; other times emotional or psychological.

Change is both inevitable and necessary. If everything stays the same, no one is growing. But we have a Shepherd who guides us through change and leads us to a better place. Getting there may be difficult, as it was for the Israelites in reaching the Promised Land. They grumbled when their situation got worse rather than better (Ex. 15:24; Num. 14:2). But we have the example of Jesus. In less than a week, He went from being the leader of many to being abandoned by all. Between Palm Sunday and Good Friday, the Good Shepherd became the Passover Lamb. Because Christ willingly went through suffering, God elevated Him to the highest place (John 10:11; Phil. 2:8-9).

Not all change is pleasant, but when we’re being led to a better place by Someone who loves us, we don’t need to fear it.

Home safe and sound...water running on some of the streets. What a mess!! The city had better get out and start steaming the drains open. At the end of my street the water is curb to curb, if you could see the curbs yet.

Even chipped more ice before coming in. I’ve almost made a path to the street.
