I live a mile or so away from one end of a military base. And I can tell without opening my eyes what is landing or taking off. F-18, F-16, B-52, C-5, Jap Zero (during the airshow), F-35... etc... Even without hearing call signs from the tower frequency.

I heard a weird one the other day and had to step out on the porch to see what it was.

C-17.

My first irrational thought was: "that C-5 needs to bulk up." ;)

Don't see 'em that often.

At the 50th Air Force anniversary at Nellis AFB, 1997, the C-17 display included a model with FedEx markings. ‘Seems like it would be a good plane for them.

I got to fly in one a couple of years ago. I sat in the cockpit on landing, then got to watch the pilot back it up into a tight spot (no room to turn around) using the thrust reversers.
