Exclusive: Newt Gingrich cuts staff, aims at Tampa

Newt Gingrich is cutting back his campaign schedule, will lay off about a third of his cash-strapped campaign’s full-time staff, and has replaced his manager as part of what aides are calling a “big-choice convention” strategy, communications director Joe DeSantis told POLITICO.

Michael Krull, a former advance man and a college friend of Callista Gingrich’s who took over the campaign after a staff exodus in June, was replaced last weekend by Vince Haley, who has worked for Gingrich for nine years and currently is deputy campaign manager and policy director.

“We’re focusing exclusively on what it’ll take to win what we’re going to be calling a big-choice convention in August,” DeSantis said in a phone interview Tuesday night.

It’s largely a strategy of necessity: The former House Speaker is a distant third in delegates, behind Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. His campaign-finance report for February, released last week, showed more debt ($1.55 million) than cash on hand ($1.54 million).

DeSantis said the former Speaker will continue to visit states with primaries, but will have a less intense campaign schedule. DeSantis promised that the campaign will be “more positive and ideas-focused,” eschewing attacks on Republican rivals. The aide said the campaign will be more digital, focusing on low-cost communications tools, including informational videos, social media and the web.

If his convention strategy is to first deny Romney the nomination... he should share this fact with supporters and play the Sarah Palin card.... “If I was a voter in [state] and I wanted to deny the father of gay marriage and ObamaCare the Republican nomination, I would vote for Rick Santorum.”

This should have been between Gingrich and Santorum, sans the annointed of the GOP-loser branch, Romney.

I must admit that I thought with the media, the pundits, Drudge, and the Romney Machine all attacking Santorum 24/7, and constantly lying about what he actually says, that Gingrich would make a comeback—after which they would have turned on him again.

But, for whatever reason, Newt seems to have pretty much fallen out of contention. Just enough steam left to help Romney get more delegates away from Santorum, by dividing the conservative vote.

Why is he doing this? I don’t know. But if Romney wins the nomination, I sure as hell hope we can decide on a write-in candidate to unite behind.

Shades of 2008 all over again. Only Romney will be even worse than McCain. Much worse. No way I will ever vote for him, no matter who his VP is.

“Furthermore, the fact is the more than a million more people have voted against Mitt Romney than for him. We believe that if Governor Romney is unable to secure 1144 by the last primaries, he will be unable to do so at the convention where the vast majority of the delegates are conservative. That creates and environment at the convention where Gingrich can emerge as the one candidate who can unite social, economic and national security conservatives (a fact which is borne out by polling).”

Newt’s broke...no, worse, he’s in debt and charging $10 for yard signs and $50 for a photo with a supporter. Sad.

He’s become a caricature of candidate. Personally, I think he’s doing most of this to please wife #3. He never ran a serious presidential campaign from day one.

Santorum supporters are a hopeless cause.

That would be tantamount to exiting the race.

Santorum will not get over 57% of Newt supporters. If he can't get within 2% of Romney with Newt in the race, Newt's exit wouldn't help him beat Romney in delegates.

In actuality, Santorum benefits because Romney pulling 4-5 Newt supporters could put Mitt over 50% in some states, denying Santorum all delegates in states where that's a rule.

This is the hard math.
