Thanks. As I said, I don’t know German. A zimmerman is a carpenter, though, right? I was told that an ancestor changed their name from Zimmerman to Carpenter when they came to this country, back in the 1700s.

You are correct, the word “zimmerman” is used in German to describe a finish carpenter, the one who does all the detailed, inside work.
