If Zimmerman tried to detain Martin and they struggled as a result Zimmerman is partially responsible for provoking the attack.

No, if Zimmerman, who was armed, tried to detain Martin then Zimmerman would be 100% responsible.

The SYG law would apply to Martin defending himself - not to the instigator.

I meant in terms of whether it was purely self defense. Yes it was to a degree self defense but in my opinion it does not rise to the level of a totally innocent person who takes action to keep themselves from being killed or harmed in an unprovoked attack.

So bottom line I agree with you. Zimmerman would not have had to defend himself if he had not confronted Martin.
