SAN FRANCISCO -- Embattled San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi is refusing to resign, his lawyer told the Associated Press, despite Mayor Ed Lee's ultimatum that he step down or be ousted in an ethics probe.
A spokesman with the mayor's office said Lee will address the issue later in the day, and reporters have gathered at the San Francisco sheriff's office after being told Mirkarimi will also make a statement today.
Attorney Lidia Stiglich told the AP that Mirkarimi was asked by Lee to step down after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor count of false imprisonment.
"I'm not aware of any plans for the sheriff to resign," Stiglich said. "I'm disappointed it's proceeding in this fashion. I think it should be left to the voters."
Victims advocates and others have stepped up pressure on Lee, calling on him to start the process of removing the recently elected sheriff from office.
Tuesday's drama played out a day after the sheriff was sentenced to three months' probation for a New Year's Eve confrontation with his Venezuelan soap star wife, Eliana Lopez, who has publicly defended her husband and refused to support the legal and political case against him.
But Lopez abruptly cancelled a news conference of her own Tuesday morning, after an explosive Op-Ed letter appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle from Mirkarimi's and Lopez's neighbor, accusing the couple of pressuring them to destroy evidence and lie to police.

Compare this to Hayashi, who was caught red handed stealing $2,500 dollars worth of clothes from a SF department store. Yet no one is asking for her resignation.

San Francisco — Mayor Ed Lee is suspending Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi from his post, the first step toward removing him from office permanently for official misconduct.
“He has chosen not to resign and now I must act,” Lee said in a 5 p.m. news conference today. He said the sheriff’s actions “fell below the standard of decency and good faith” needed for public officials.
Mirkarimi pleaded guilty last week to a misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment for an incident involving his wife on New Year’s Eve.
Lee named Vicki Hennessy to serve as interim sheriff. Hennessy last ran the Department of Emergency Management after a career in the Sheriff’s Department, where she retired as chief deputy.
Good, I’m glad this city is imploding. I’m glad they have an elected Sheriff who beats his South America Novela star wife, I’m glad he needs to pay a price, I’m glad the mayor is in a jam.
