Extremely rare permit granted by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
A pair of Wyoming bald eagles now qualify as a really endangered species.
The Northern Arapaho Tribe secured an extraordinarily rare permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service allowing the Native Americans to kill two of the national birds for religious use.
The national agency, in a 2009 report, said it has never issued a license for the killing of a bald eagle making it likely that the tribe was the first group to ever get the legal go-ahead.
The highly unusual decision came three years after the tribes initial request to kill two of the eagles. The ruling could defuse a federal lawsuit filed last year by the tribe in the flap.
Federal law bars the killing of any bald eagle under almost any circumstance. The Wyoming tribe argued that the ban was a violation of their religious freedom.
Although the bald eagle was removed from the federal list of threatened species five years ago, the bird remains under the protection of the federal Bald and Golden Eagle Act.
I am one third Seminole Indian, and I find this disgusting.
The Bald Eagle is a symbol of our nation, and any Indian worth the name does not kill an animal brother, except for food, shelter, or being attacked.
This should not be allowed.
Hi Fawn,
Long time since our last exchange of posts.
Regarding the eagle and the Indigenous Persons claim of a religious purpose for killing an eagle:
1. The eagles are all over the dumps in Alaska.
2. The Founders would have understood the religious claim, as the Declaration of Independence makes quite clear.
3. Might I inquire as to the reasons you have for differing with their perspective on this issue?
4. In what way is an Indian killing an eagle different from a wind turbine blade killing an eagle?
5. Not to cause you any distress, but SCOTUS has ruled animals may be killed for religious purposes.
6. SCOTUS ruled on animal sacrifices, not human sacrifices - so MadMo’s followers are not likely to have their “neck cutting” legalized.
7. #6 is retracted if the Libtards and Obama survive the next election.
“....because you my friend are a second class citizen.”
Gosh do you think we rate that high a rung on the food chain? WE got Muslims, gays, blacks, autistic lesbians against guns....., just about any organized victim group ahead of me and most Americans. These politicians are more concerned with the illegal alien vote than they are my vote and my ancestors, 3 branches have been here since the 1600’s. The 4th branch was already here. They just happened to be a group of Indians that didn’t want to be ‘victims’...they didn’t last long and the tribe is still basically a bunch of leftist useful idiots.
What people forget here is that the Indians are members of a sovereign nation, with property and rights supposed to be recognized by treaties.
If you recall your high school civics class, treaties trump the US Constitution.
Muzzies would not be on a equal legal footing with American Indians.
And, BTW, for people who aren’t in Wyoming in the spring: Bald Eagles are thick as flies in March and October. There are a couple weeks where we have dozens (NB the plural) in the trees around our house. Anything on the ground that moves does so near a wall or fence, and it moves fast.
A fellow on the radio noted that the Northern Arapaho Indian Tribe is allowed to practice their religion, while the Catholic church is required to violate theirs.
What was his name again? Limerick? Limbo? Lambeau? Something like that.
What an asinine accusation.
When I read about this yesterday I wondered about them actually KILLING the eagles for their feathers...
That was strange to me...
as you pointed out Indians dont kill the animals except for food etc because theyt regard them as brothers...
The headline is incorrect and misleading. They already had the right guaranteed by the law protecting the endangered eagles.
They applied for and received a permit to exercise that right under the stipulated terms.
In California they call those windmills “Condor Cuisinarts”. Condors are also rare and protected but pro windmill greenies don’t mind ...... Eco-fanatic liberals are worlds biggest hippocrits
For the record...... I don’t think a California Condor has ever been killed by a wind turbine.
There is some thought that the condor is increasing it’s range to the fringe of the wind turbine territory
I still don’t like it :)
I got no problem if they 'keep it real.' No 30.06 with a scope... no 410 over and under. Use a hand made bow and a flint arrowhead.
“BTW, killing our national bird is not a joke. Some of you are just cold.”
I agree with you. I am disgusted beyond belief.
On the subject of “Religious Freedom” This Tribe could get all the feathers and Eagles they want from the National Repository.
So much for their deep abiding love for their Sacred Eagle.
Also, where are the liberals and animal activists. They are all a bunch of cowardly pigs.
I am very angry about this...
“I still dont like it :)”
Neither do the eagles, but who asked them?
And, while on the subject, when did an eagle last ask its prey if it consented?
;-)
“I see sveral Bald Eagles every day here in Md.
They are not near as rare as they used to be.”
So? They are our National Bird. Obama bends over backwards to let our National Bird be killed for the “religious purposes” of Native Americans, but tramples all over everyone else’s rights.
