in what amounts to a basic 3 way tie how can you on one hand say it was a “win” for Newt and a “loss” for Romney?

All 3 basically get the same number of delegates. Rick did get the bragging rights.

I see Newt and Rick coming to an agreement and stomping Mitt at the convention.

A win for NEWT, 1/3 of the delegates. Rick can have the bragging rights.

Because Newt himself made a Really Big Deal out of how he was going to swamp the others in Alabama and Mississippi, after his prediction that he’d swamp the others on Super Tuesday was a dud.

Look, you can’t keep promising that you’re going to rise spectacularly from the ashes (as Newt has been doing since Florida) for ever without at least once having your predictions at least come close to coming true. Newt said he’d win handily in the Deep South.

He
did
not.

So he lost handily.

When you predict a big win, a small numerical loss (and 5% loss in Alabama is actually not insignificant) is a big loss.
