Watts, Cain to appear in Tulsa for Gingrich (Newt Coming to Oklahoma )

They are coming Monday on behalf of the presidential hopeful.

mer Oklahoma Congressman J.C. Watts and former presidential candidate Herman Cain will appear Monday in Tulsa on behalf of Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich.

Watts and Cain will be at Joe Momma's Pizza, 112 S. Elgin Ave., at 11 a.m.

The restaurant is owned by Republican City Councilor Blake Ewing, but Ewing said he had no role in scheduling the event and does not endorse Gingrich.

Ewing said the event was scheduled by the state Republican Party, which wanted Cain - the former head of Godfather's Pizza - to appear at a pizza restaurant.

Watts and Cain have acted as "surrogates" for Gingrich, the former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, on many occasions.

Watts served in the House during Gingrich's tenure, and Cain joined with Gingrich after dropping his own bid for the GOP presidential nomination.

Gingrich himself appeared in Tulsa and Oklahoma City last month and was third among Oklahoma Republicans in the most recent independent polling, trailing former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

That polling also showed that Oklahoma Republicans give Gingrich high marks for leadership and experience.

Gingrich led the same poll as recently as December.

On Friday, ABC News reported that Gingrich began a robocall attack on Santorum in Oklahoma and Tennessee. The report says the automated phone calls link Santorum to "union bosses."

Watts is a former University of Oklahoma quarterback who became the first black Oklahoman elected to statewide office - the Corporation Commission - in 1990. He was elected to Congress in 1994 and, unlike contemporaries Tom Coburn and Steve Largent, remained a Gingrich ally through the revolt that ultimately toppled the Georgian from the speaker's chair.

Watts left Congress in 2003 and has been active as a businessman and lobbyist since.

Cain appeared at a state party fundraiser in Oklahoma City in December, shortly after he dropped out of the presidential race.

Watts and Gingrich will make two Oklahoma City-area appearances Monday afternoon, at 1:30 p.m. at Drill Right Technology and at 3 p.m. at Reed Center in Midwest City.
