(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
QUESTION: If you had to choose one of your opponents on the stage tonight to be your running mate in the 2012 election, who would you choose, and why? And why would this person help you make the country better?
(END VIDEO CLIP)
BAIER: Again, if you had to choose a running mate, one of the people on the stage with you, who would you choose and why? Thirty seconds down the row.
BAIER: Senator Santorum, who would you choose?
SANTORUM: I would pick someone who would do what I have articulated I would do as president of the United States. That's what you -- that's what a vice president should be, someone who would follow through on what you promise the American public to do.
BAIER: You have eight to choose.
SANTORUM: And -- and I -- and I would say that, you know, right now that, you know, the guy that I'm agreeing with most up on stage is probably the guy to my left. So I would say that Newt Gingrich would be the guy that I would -- I would pick as someone who -- who would follow through with what I'm saying.
BAIER: Speaker Gingrich?
GINGRICH: Yeah, I'm going to disappoint those in the audience who want this to be a Hollywood game. I don't have any idea who I would pick as the vice presidential nominee. What I do know is, it would have to be a person capable of being president of the United States, and that would be the first criteria. These are all good friends of mine. I couldn't imagine hurting any of their feelings by choosing one tonight.

I think Newt would have picked Newt for his VP. :-)
That old clip just rubs salt in my wounds. Looking at the field today I would love to have a Johnson/Paul ticket or a Perry/Cain.
I could live with it.
Most likely like Romney and Gingrich if they get 1,144 delegates, everyone will lean towards Marco Rubio.
Santorum/Rubio - Wins Union-type Reagan Democrats in the Midwest and the Hispanic vote. That’s virtually 2/3 of the Demographical makeup of the potential 12-13 battleground states.
Are you serious? Can’t you see what this is about? Slick Rick will NEVER get my vote and neither will his counterpart Mitt.
Herman Cain picked Newt that night also...
I don’t agree with that at all. Rick has attacked Mitt more than he’s attacked Newt. Meanwhile Newt has attacked Mitt while he’s barely said a negative word about Rick. Rick is attacking Newt because he wants to be the winner, not to help Mitt. Ron Paul and Mitt clearly have a non-aggression pact because they barely ever attack each other if at all. But there isn’t any evidence that Rick has a non-aggression with anyone.
It would be sweet having Newt as President of the Senate! Heads would explode!
I thought of that the other day. He could go against tradition and insist on presiding over most sessions of the Senate.
It was a stupid question and Newt was right to call them on it but I would be willing to put money the VP will be someone who didn’t run for president. Recent history (Palin, Cheney, etc) would say the nominee, whomever it is, will look for someone who didn’t get muddy throwing their hat in the ring.
