It's not a tax haven so far as I know (although the new administration is pushing offshore banking). It's still a British affiliated island (or pair of islands, actually) but independent, and I'd say 99% of their income is still tourism.

Breyer is just a part-time member of the expat community that you'll find all over the Caribbean. The cost of living is low, so vacation homes are very affordable. If you play your cards right, you don't even need to buy one. My parents stayed free at a friend's villa for years, since my dad is a very competent plumber and electrician and my mom does interior design. Whenever their friends didn't need the place, they would show up with a big box of stuff and get to work, and incidentally loll on the beach and drink rum punches on the veranda. Not a bad deal.

< raises hand>

I resemble that remark.

Whenever we visit someone’s vacation home, I work hard to find some way to leave it better than I found it, even if it is just a small thing. Recent examples in the last 2-3 years: Replaced failing batteries in a commercial alarm panel for a 3-unit condo that eliminated the need for a weekend alarm company 30 mile truck roll ($$), as the panel was beeping obnoxiously (Beaufort). Reversed the dryer door on a stacked front-loading W/D set so that the hinge was against the wall like the washer, improving laundry room ergonomics significantly (Santa Rosa Beach). Added a waterproof switch to a light pole down by the dock (Lake Blue Ridge). Washed down outside patio and roll up window shutters and defrosted non-auto-defrost refrigerator (silly Europeans)(Nice).

We get invited back a lot, in general.

Back to the topic at hand - I’m glad Breyer and family are OK, and I hope he learned a lesson. And I hope it is one we could agree with.

Well, if SCALIA had a place down there, we'd hear all about this:

Nevis is a part of the politically independent St Kitts and Nevis Federation. Traditionally, St. Kitts focuses on tourism business and Nevis offers offshore asset protection services. Nevis has own offshore legislation, which brings a lot of advantages to clients involved in international business activities.

Our professional company offers Nevis International Business Companies (IBC) and Nevis Limited Liability Companies (LLC).

ADVANTAGES OF NEVIS

Independent jurisdiction
Exemption from income, withholding, gift, estate and succession taxes
Outstanding confidentiality and asset protection features
Stable political environment and secure economy
Well-developed financial services industry
Common law legal system based on English law
Well developed professional infrastructure
Excellent telecommunications system
Easy air access to North America and Europe
No foreign exchange restrictions
Citizenship programs are available for investors.

TAXATION

Nevis IBC (also called as Nevis Business Corporation) and Limited Liability Company are exempt from all local taxes, including income, withholding, capital gain taxes, stamp duties and other fees or taxes based upon income or assets originating outside of Nevis or in connection with other activities outside of Nevis.

PRIVACY AND DISCLOSURE

Information about beneficial owners, shareholders/members, directors/managers and officers is not filed with the Nevis government, and not available to the public.

It's quite expensive to initiate any lawsuit in Nevis. If a creditor or any other person would like to sue a Nevis company and its owners, that person must post a non-refundable bond of at least $25,000 and hire a Nevis lawyer.

CURRENCY

The official currency is the East Caribbean Dollar. It has a fixed exchange rate with US Dollar, which is US$1.00 = EC$2.70.

US Dollars are freely accepted as a second currency in Nevis.

TRANSFER OF FUNDS

There are no currency exchange and transfer of funds controls in Nevis.

The Government of Nevis guarantees the free transfers of profits and repatriation of capital. The transfer of dividends, interest, royalties other profits or for repatriation of capital are not required any government approval.
