I think the loss of his wife has cracked the foundations of his Faith.
Much of it comes from hubris. I have after much soul searching and many struggles finaly come to understand that it is not my place to ask God to stand to account for what occurs here on Earth.
My purpose--my sole purpose--is to try to do God's will as I understand it. I don't need to understand why this happens or why that happens, I only need to understand what my job is.
As I do that, I come to understand many things that were obscure to me.
Understanding is not required, except that I do understand that the closer I come to doing God's will rather than what my own warped, venal, corrupt mind tells me to do, the happier I am.
Everytime I think "It's not fair." I force myself to think seriously about what my life would have been like if life was genuinely "fair." It's not a pretty picture.
Many Christians have fallen into the trap of attempting to "humanize" God. He is beyond human understanding and unfortunately many--like Neeson--who have experienced pain are unable to humble themselves before God and pray for strength rather than asking why.
