Planned Parenthood does not perform cancer screenings.

All they do is make referrals. The Department of Health, local library and Internet already have that well-covered.

I’ve supported Komen with significant funds for years but until last year I didn’t know about the Planned Parenthood connection. I had a serious debate with myself about whether to continue my support but decided to continue for at least this year.

I was vastly relieved when they announced they would stop supporting Planned Parenthood. If they reneg on this I will stop sending them money.

I don’t think this was a quickly made decision. I suspect that many in the Komen organization and specifically the board were bothered by the inclusion of PP and they have finally found a graceful way out.

This probably goes back a number years and it is just recently that they decided to go with a low key exit.

PP has really hurt Komen. I know a lot of women who distrust Komen because of their relationship with PP and it will take a few years to build back that trust. I think they made a great decision and executed it beautifully.

And really....how much does it cost to perform a manual exam on a woman who probably was already there for a pap or a contraceptive checkup? Right...it costs nothing.
How much does it cost to pick up the phone and make a referral? Nothing.

Supposedly...those organizations that received referred patients and performed mammograms were then reimbursed by that PP office.
That’s the idea. Would be nice to see if it actually worked out that way.

So what is PP trying to say? They “can’t” perform manual exams anymore? They can’t make referrals anymore?

Their wailing and screaming just proves they weren’t using this money for it’s supposed intended purpose.
