Dogs figure prominently in the history of Dutch politics. The Pug was the mascot of the ruling House of Orange. The Dutch Patriot party favored the breed found on Dutch barges. The leader of the Patriot party, 18th-century Dutch Patriot, Cornelis (Kees) de Gyselaer gave this silver and black spitz breed its name, “Keeshond”, (Kees’Dog).
