An Afghan father, his wife and their son have been jailed for life after a jury found them guilty of killing three teenage sisters and a co-wife in what the judge described as a 'despicable' and 'heinous' crime. The jury had taken 15 hours to find Mohammad Shafia, 58, his wife Tooba Yahya, 42; and their son Hamed, 21, each guilty of four counts of first-degree murder. The four bodies were found in June 2009 in a car submerged in a canal in Kingston, Ontario, where the family had stopped for the night on their way home from Niagara Falls.

The media here last night described this incident as a “supposed honor killing” with no mention of the family being muslim. This country is in a state of denial of the threat at hand.

I’m bemused. They murdered the women ostensibly in defense of their family honor. Yet they deny their involvement in the murders. If it was an accident, then honor is not an issue. If it was honor, it was premeditated murder. Perversely, they were convicted on the evidence and by virture of their denials now have no claim to honor. The same denial would also preclude a review under sharia. I guess tribal savages aren’t strong in the thinking things through department.
