It's Not About Newt
American Thinker ^ | January 28, 2012 | Joseph Koenig

GOP voters are sending a clarion call to the party establishment, but it seems GOP leaders are not getting the message. The statement being sent to the GOP elite isn't about Newt, and it goes beyond even Romney. It is about a deep dissatisfaction that has been building for years within the Republican rank and file.

With the proclamations of Bob Dole and others against Newt Gingrich recently, it is clear the GOP establishment fears a Gingrich nomination. In truth, however, it is the GOP establishment's own ineffectual leadership that led to the recent surge of the former Speaker of the House.

The prevailing wisdom in Washington and the media is that Newt's re-birth in South Carolina is due to his fiery debate performances, which is true, but what happened in the polls goes far beyond clear articulation of conservative principles and debate prowess. Yes, the Republican voters want a fighter, someone who will take on President Obama, but Newt's boldness and passion resonated so well with the disaffected party base, they were willing to overlook his huge political and personal shortcomings. There is a larger lesson here.

I think it’s mostly about Mitt Romney actually.

To me, the Republican party lost its way after Newt stepped down as Speaker. Trent Lott started this whole "we-have-to-go-along-to-get-along" thing, and Washington D.C. just disintegrated into this "club" where R's and D's don't matter anymore, and campaign "values" are dismissed as easily as a tissue after a sneeze.

Right now, the scale in Washington runs from Extreme Left to Moderate. There are no real conservatives out there shrinking the size of government or even attempting to do so.

Oh, there are those that SAY they interested in shrinking government, and yet, somehow things like Obamacare and TARP get approved without a second thought.

Well, that, and the dissatisfaction with the media. Newt slapping them upside the head occasionally, is also a reason why some are giving their nod toward Newt.

The question goes back to an age old fundamental issue...is Mitt Romney the Problem or a symptom of the problem? Romney on his own probably is about 5th in this field. The party poo-bah alignment with him to destroy every conservative option and foist a left of center Romney to be the head of the party seems to be the issue at hand.

Frankly, if Romney ran this year as he did in 2008 as a conservative option, he probably would have run away from this field, but he moderated quite a bit since the 2008 debates. This supports your claim that the problem definitely revolves around a rejection of Romney.

I also think it is bigger than that. The coordinated effort to destroy every conservative, including the atrociousness attacks on Gingrich in the past week by the old party faithful, shows a problem much bigger than Romney.

Since Reagan:
G.H. Bush, a milk toast moderate
Bob Dole, a milk toast moderate
G.W. Bush, a milk toast moderate willing to kill Islamists
John McCain, a cross-the-aile, progressive Republican

We have got to break this mold.

The media will brand any GOP candidate as a baby killer, so why are we pulling our punches?

Newt in 2012! He ain't perfect, and he's not going to save us all, but he is NOT Romney. If in doubt reread his Contract with America.

As Mitt Romney’s mask of civility has been removed out of desperation to destroy his latest challenger, his bitter mocking and taunting of Newt Gingrich reflects what the GOP Establishment thinks of Conservatives like me. I despise the GOP machine almost as much as the Democrat machine, because they both despise me.

I read an article last fall that indicated that Trent Lott (now a lobbyist on K street)was adamantly against te Tea Party candidates in 2010. To my amazement on of his allegedly comments was “We don’t need any more Jim DeMents here in Congress). The article went on to say that if the Tea Party folks DID win, they would certainly need to be “co-opted” when they arrive. IOW... sit down, shut up and do as I say.

Think back folks how Trent Lott, even W, McJuan McCain (you don’t have to be afraid of an Obama presidency), Denny Hastert, McConnell, Rove and all the rest of these entrenched leaders have taken our votes, then tossed us aside like yesterday’s garbage.

Sick of it? Well - it’s time to do something about it. Keep up the presure - call ANYONE you know in Florida - help them decide to vote for Newt.

This whole nomination process is nuts. Why must we here in flyover country be forced to accept what 3 states, now Florida decide who should be our candidate. Like Sarah says..... there are 47 states that haven’t voted yet.

“they were willing to overlook his huge political and personal shortcomings.”

Personal shortcomings maybe, but political?
How about his great political achievements? We are looking at those, not overlooking them.

It’s simple really. We’re tired of the government telling us how to live our lives and attempting to control us. This is supposed to be the land of the free. Liberty for all. Liberty - Freedom - those are the bywords of the Republic. The establishment types do not care about those words and are willing to compromise anything as long as they can maintain any tentative grip on power. That is what the Tea party congealed around. It is what the hope for Newt is about and it is why we abhore Romney or any of the other “moderate” candidates. We want to be left alone to live our lives as free men. They can’t allow that without losing their grip on their perceived power.

I won't argue about that. It appears to be a simple intra-party power struggle but is that all it is?

From The Article:

The tone-deafness of the Republican establishment could not be more astounding.

For me that sums it up quite well. They DO hear us but they DON’T listen to us. As far as the GOP-E is concerned we are useful as far as being ATM’s for their campaigns and as voters.

At this point in time between the GOP-E’s efforts and Romney’s Burn the Fields and Cities approach to getting competitors out of his way so that he can achieve his lifetime desire of becoming President, I find myself cheering on Newt.

But if Romney does manage to buy the nomination I will find myself going to the polls in November and writing in a different candidate for President.

Preach it brother! Here in the NEborg we don't get to vote until May. In 2008, McCain's anointing was a done deal before we ever got to vote. :-(

No Repubs vote yea for stimulus.

The bill passed the Senate late Friday night with a vote of 60-38 after Democratic leadership held the vote open for several hours to allow one member, Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, to return to Washington to cast the deciding vote. He had flown back from Ohio, where his mother died earlier in the week. "We just passed this bill to help our struggling economy," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said. The House approved the measure earlier in the day by a vote of 246-183, with no Republican "yes" votes and one member voting present.
