Madison - The Assembly approved a wide-ranging bill Thursday easing the way for an iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin, which supporters heralded as a way to create jobs and opponents disparaged as harmful to the environment.
The bill passed 59-36, with all Republicans for it and all Democrats against it.
"This definitely is the biggest jobs thing we're going to do" this legislative session, Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald (R-Horicon) said.
"These aren't jobs that can pick up and go to China or India," he said. "The iron ore is in our ground, in Wisconsin."
Democrats, environmentalists and many tribal leaders oppose the legislation and have criticized it for, among other things, weakening water protections and reducing public participation in the review process.
"It'll destroy our wild rice fields and run right into our watershed, and we'll be the ones affected by it," said Eldred Corbine, a member of the tribal council of the Bad River band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
The Bad River's tribal lands lie on the shore of Lake Superior downstream from the proposed mine, and tribal members demonstrated against the bill outside the Assembly chambers before the start of the debate. Later, a new round of protesting erupted outside the chamber after Republicans cleared the viewing galleries because of disruptions that included draping a "Bury the bill" banner from a railing.

Wisconsin Mining Bill Ping

Oh, let me guess... this will be followed by another round of protests and recalls?

I'll just bet there's more than a few men in the Bad River band of the Lake Superior Chippewa who might jump on the chance for a good mining job.
These so-called Chippewa “leaders” are nothing more than low IQ hacks who are led around by their noses by white hippy chicks who exchange sex and money for liberal votes by these “leaders.”
The Anishinabe women have run more than a few of these white trash Marxist wannabe Indians off the reserves in Michigan and Wisconsin.
