Would Mitt Romney be the first Mexican American president?

Reporting from Miami— Mitt Romney allowed Wednesday that he wouldn’t mind if voters regarded him as the Mexican American candidate in the 2012 presidential election.

The Republican made the tongue-in-cheek remark during an exchange with a TV interviewer for Univision, a network aimed at Spanish speakers, who raised the question because of the Mexican heritage of Romney’s father.

George Romney -- auto company president, Michigan governor and 1968 Republican presidential aspirant -- was, in fact, born in Mexico, where his parents lived in a Mormon community.

Jorge Ramos, a Univision TV anchor, asked if that could allow his son to claim that he’s of Mexican American descent and possibly become the first Hispanic president.

Romney, who doesn’t speak Spanish, indicated that he’d be very pleased if that idea got spread around ahead of Tuesday’s primary in Florida. About one-tenth of the Republican vote is expected to be cast by Latinos, mainly Cuban Americans, Puerto Ricans and a smattering of immigrants from Central and South America.

“I would love to be able to convince people of that, particularly in a Florida primary,” Romney said, with a chuckle, during the interview in Miami, a Cuban American stronghold.

Would Mitt Romney be the first Mexican American president?

Former candidates who got their butt's handed to them in the primaries typically don't hold any title. So no, he'll never have that title.

Was his dad the first Mexican American
governor of Michigan? Mitt is as leftwing as his dad was, and that is what important!

He’s desperate. Being born in Mexico (as his father was) doesn’t make him Hispanic, and in any case, it might raise questions about his 3 (or was it 5?) grandmothers.

Grampa Romney moved to Mexico with a herd of wives so he could carry on the polygamy that the Mormons were trying to distance themselves from at that point. Romney’s father was born to one of these multiple grandmothers.

Well. If that isn’t enough to make one puke I don’t know what is. Clinton called himself the first African-American President and now Willard wants to be the first Mexican-American President.

Would Mitt Romney be the first Mexican American president?

The premise of the question sucks but it's typical for this particular "newspaper".

A better and more pressing question would be; would the Los Angeles Times make a reasonable bird-cage liner ?

So if George Romney was born in Mexico, does that make Mitt a natural born?

George Romney ran for President against Richard Nixon. I guess the constitution died a long time ago!

Miles Park Romney was Willard’s G grandpa and he and his 5 wives took off for Mexico because they were running from the law. Utah had outlawed polygamy and grandpa wanted to continue his polygamist lifestyle. While in Mexico he founded a thriving Morman community but none of the squeaky white Mormans ever intermarried with Mexicans. Hell, they would have been ran out of the cult.

George was born in Mexico to two US Citizen Parents so had US Citizenship at Birth. While Mitt is a Natural Born Citizen, his father George wasn't and should not have ran for President.

Romney then bet the interviewer 10,000 dollars that he was indeed Mexican.
