The state GOP has authorized the Virginia State Board of Elections to scrap a much-criticized loyalty oath from the March 6 presidential primary ballot.
The party's State Central Committee is scheduled to take up the issue Saturday in Richmond. The state party polled committee members sooner because the elections board faces a Friday deadline to mail out absentee ballots 45 days ahead of the primary, as state law requires.
"We informally polled the GOP State Central Committee over the past week and there was an overwhelming and near unanimous feeling that we should rescind the loyalty oath," Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins wrote on his Facebook page.

What’s the point of open primaries? Does anyone know?
Hey, how the hell can they change the rules during the primary season and have it affect the current primary?
If they can use rationale to change this, then they can use the same rationale to give VA voters the full slate of choices, and not punish voters enfranchisement.
I guess it's decided by the States and supposedly it's supposed to recruit people into the party. I don't buy it and think it's absurd.
Hmmmmmmm..... So whom or what are they swearing this ‘oath’ to ?
What a crock!
Isn't that the period during which those with money are allowed to 'buy in' on the gamble of future political influence?
Der Furher AKA the Repub committee.
This is a way to weaken the Republican Party to allow "moderates, independents, and dimocRATS" to control the Republican Party (aka the "Establishment") who hate conservatives.
This "open primary" or "non-partisan primary" is a way to give us more Bob Doles, Juan McLame, etc. to run against Obamas.
Good bye to the Republican Party!
Exactly! If they can do this....they can put Perry, Gingrich and Santo on the ballot.
Rules? They can change their stinkin' rules...evidently.
With VA’s open primaries, the GOP has been trying to get a loyalty oath for decades. In unfortunate timing, they finally achieved it at the same time there was the brouhaha about candidates qualifying to be on the ballot.
Open primaries make primary results impossible to decipher. I’ve seen neighbors vote in GOP primaries, who will later post the Dem’s posters on their yard. Open primaries also makes determining who the GOP voters in the precincts impossible. If you don’t know the people personally, you are stuck as a precinct chairman.
The loyalty oath is an option that the party decides. Same is true on the Democrat side.
Republicans who were polled overwhelmingly OPPOSED the loyalty oath.
Regarding the strict Primary rules, that was a LAW passed by the Democrats in the 1990s when they controlled the legislature. The primary rules thus can only be changed by law.
Our VA General Assembly is in session right now, so it is a good opportunity to contact them.
Check out the GA website, it shows all bills by date introducted and sponsor, along with phone numbers, emails ,etc. www.leg1.state.va.us
Also, there is a bill (SB 510)in the Senate to allow write ins in a primary but it is unlikely to be approved before absentee ballots must go out this year. It can improve things in the future.

The best the local party can do is provide the names of those who voted in GOP primaries, so you’re still stuck with the cross-overs who are generally the most hard-core Dems.
