Gingrich calls S. Carolina 'Armageddon'
UPI ^

As the South Carolina primary nears, Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich has mounted a hard-nosed campaign to try to best front-runner Mitt Romney.

In faceoffs in Iowa and New Hampshire, Gingrich finished in the back of the pack and is doing what he can to ensure Saturday's primary won't be his third poor showing, CNN reported.

During the weekend, two conservative politicians in South Carolina -- U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham and U.S. Rep. Tim Scott -- predicted that if Romney wins the state's primary, he will have effectively locked down the GOP nomination.

The former House speaker has prepared every political weapon he has -- television ads, rallies, surrogates crisscrossing the state -- and told CNN he is determined to beat the Republican front-runner.

"This is going to be Armageddon. They are going to come in here with everything they've got, every surrogate, every ad, every negative attack," Gingrich told CNN last week. "At the same time we'll be drawing a sharp contrast between a Georgia Reagan conservative and a Massachusetts moderate who's pro-gun control, pro-choice, pro-tax increase, pro-liberal judge, and the voters of South Carolina will have to look and decide."

His sharp attacks -- including chastising Romney for his leadership at Bain Capital and tying his work to job losses -- prompted members of his party to say Gingrich has gone too far by launching they consider an assault on capitalism.

But Gingrich's take-no-prisoners approach seems to be working, CNN reported. The latest American Research Group poll of likely South Carolina GOP primary voters indicates Romney at 29 percent and Gingrich in a close second at 25 percent.

At a forum in Duncan late last week, Gingrich warned of the peril of not coalescing around one conservative candidate.

"If we end up splitting the conservative vote," he said, "we're going to stumble into nominating somebody that 95 percent of the people in this room are going to be very uncomfortable with."

I wish Newt could muster an "Armageddon," the current Republican establishment needs a bloodbath.

Newt has brought on his own bloodbath/armageddon. That is, he shares a lot of the blame. But if the main line conservative candidates didn’t suck so bad, Newt wouldn’t be as negative right now. As it is, if he’s gone after SC, oh well.

I see 2012 as almost certainly the year the SHTF. And I also believe that events happening within the US presidential race could (and probably will) be the catalyst for some very bad things. A Romney win in SC could be one of those events. If he wins, you can assume he will be the nominee. And considering the current political environment, it could push people from both sides over the edge.

The game plan is

1. Newt wins SC
2. Santorum and Perry drop out and endorse Newt
3. Newt wins FL (and is our nominee no matter what Willard tries to pull))

If 1, 2, or 3 don’t happen.. then Obama’s second term is assured as he crushes Willard (Obama-lite) in November.

NRO is working over time to discredit Newt. they have a poll running that shows Santorum beating him 2 to 1.

I can’t believe that the people of SC are this stupid.

Can we get a poll of FRers from SC here on who they support?
If Romney wins big, I mean by double digits, I’d at first be shocked because that makes me feel for the first time in my life as a crazy thinker in comparison, because I’m all the way for Newt, and I listen to the debates and read what I can.

Sopmething is not right here Folks...

As much as the MSM wanted to make out of it, it would appear that the left's idea of "over the edge" looks pretty much like taking a dump in a public park.

Romney is a socialists. Proof? Take a close look at his record in Massachusetts. He will totally lean that way and as a conservative, you can forget it. A tax type of politician.

Armageddon?

End of the World?

Only for Gingrich.

Waterloo would probably be a better descriptive, however.

I dumped TV in 1998. I use the frog analogy. I also tell people that once I jumped out of the pot, I realized the water was danged hot even in 1997.

This is one reason I do not see Obama as the problem. I see the electorate that put him in office as the problem. And they are no so easy to eliminate as an elected official.

You mean you are for Newt, the same Newt Gingrich that posed with his beloved Nancy Pelosi, the same Newt Gingrich that hobnobbed last week with his busom buddy, Rep. James Clyburn of the CBC, the same Newt Gingrich that eagerly embraced and supported ultra liberal, Dede Scovafava in NY23 CD and directly causing the loss of a safe Republican, Conservative seat, you mean the same Newt Gingrich that cuddled up to Black Racist, Rev. Al Sharpton. You have got to be kidding!!!!

Two facts you should know, both Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry are toast, no...burnt toast, done in by their own incompetent hands and words against free enterprise!!! Yes, friend reality is a shock!!!

You are right there. It would seem that the communists/left have worked the system so their idiot Romney will get the nomination. Then Romney will get hit so hard that King Obama gets another four. Looks like the hand writing is on the wall. Too many South Carolina's just can't figure it out.
