The United States is "turning the page on a decade of war", President Barack Obama said, as he unveiled a major strategic review that will cut $489 billion in defence spending over the next ten years.
As the wars of the September 11 era pass, Mr Obama said America should abandon its traditional capability of fighting two major wars at once and focus on becoming a "leaner and smarter" fighting force with an emphasis on counter terrorism, reconnaissance, cyber warfare and maintaining a nuclear deterrent.
In a rare appearance in the Pentagon press briefing room, Mr Obama however insisted that the US military would comfortably maintain its military supremacy, with proposed spending still larger than that of the next 10 countries combined. The cuts would represent less than 10 per cent of the current annual defence budget of $650 billion.
In one of the most significant strategy shifts since the end of the Second World War, the review US will turn its focus away from Europe towards the Asian Pacific region to counter the rising influence of China.

Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
“Peace in our time”
It's a miracle that the building didn't burst into flames when the Messiah stepped over the threshold.
What probably happened is that obama recently got briefed that two major wars will be at our doorstep at the same time - and soon.
Look for traitor McCain to give cover for this on FOX.
” becoming a “leaner and smarter” fighting force”
Liberal speak for “its not fair that our military is so big” and we can be dominant. Also down sizing out military means more funds for the dimoKKKRAT social issues and vote buying.
No to guns and tanks
Yes to iPhones, and XBoxs for crack whores squirting out babies
Since all of that is obviously over, we can all go back to being able to walk through an airport without disrobing and being groped by federal law enforcement agents, carrying our pocket knives at all times, having hot stewardesses in orange shorts and knee-high boots deliver us beer and peanuts and offer to light our cigarettes in flight if we forget our matches or lighters.
I think I will try that next weekend.
"turning the page"
"at the end of the day"
"issues"
"nuance"
etc...
All liberalisms that mean: "I'm not responsible for this statement."
We’ll beeeee sooooooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
But the porn machines and sex assaults at airports were part of Congress’s plan to stimulate the economy lest it slip into depression with unemployment higher than 7% for years on end. Seriously.
And the beer and peanuts got removed from airplanes to remove weight to save on fuel, which would not be so expensive had we won the war against Islamofascist terrorists and their communist allies in Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and elsewhere. (And had we allowed drilling at home.)
We turned the page on the war because this President decided to surrender Iraq and its neighbors to Islamic Republic of Iran, a terrorist archenemy of the United States. He did so despite (or perhaps, in his warped psychology, because of) a stunning and sustained (but costly, difficult, and delayed) victory that our brave soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines won against any enemy that dared to bother to attempt to shoot them. Our military made tremendous sacrifice—thousands of soldiers paid with their lives—to liberate the Iraqi people from terrorist oppressors. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let Your perpetual Light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Only after the military paid the price and effectively won the war, President Obama chose the course of surrender: withdrawing from the battlefield entirely. Iran likely will claim victory. Obama, however, will win reelection because such a victory on the part of our enemies mysteriously pleases his political base.
Is our military in Germany? We defeated the Nazis by 1953. But we’re still there. How about Italy? We’re still there. Japan? Still there. Korea? Still there. And all those nations today enjoy liberty. By contrast, after our victory in Vietnam, we surrendered and left. The communists captured the country. Millions of Vietnamese took to the high seas in fishing boats seeking refuge from those terrible oppressors. Some arrived in America, in the Philippines, or in other countries. They were lucky. So why are we leaving Iraq now with Islamic Republic of Iran and its incendiary rhetoric and military might right next door? One reason: we surrender.

Countdown until Zer0 leaves Office: 381 days as of January 5, 2012.
I agree with most of what you said in that.
Regards,
I like you. I like you a lot.
China and Iran? Or someone else?
I dunno, a cow with 5 teats might be even more useful. I think you meant “tits on a bull”.
There are plenty of folks here on FR who wanted to leave also. I call it the post January 2009 pacifist syndrome.
After 9/11 we should have bombed Afghanistan into oblivion, preferably from afar. Then simply told them if it happens again we will bomb them again, and so on until they learn. No rebuilding, no culture changing, just bomb them until they learn not to poke the giant. Iraq? If Hussein was really a threat to us we should have covertly replaced him with someone who wasn't - no reason or justification to kill anyone else.
So...yes I'm glad we are out of the sh*thole called Iraq.
